Autumn Shower

AUGUST SHOWER
By: Andrew Stevans
(all rights)

The sky was deep, dark and clear.
Stars sparkled like moonlit rain frozen;
When, far in the north sky—it seemed so near--
A bright meteor speared the horizon.

My ears seemed ready for a resonance,
Like thunder rolls after a lightning strike.
I sat immobile, not daring to chance
Missing a second streak across the night.

Marveling at the speed of its decent,
I wondered, was it really there at all?
Was this an isolated incident,
Or were others also about to fall?

Standing slowly, I gained a wider view.
The stars seemed to breath in their velvet night;
When, suddenly, the event began anew,
As many meteors took their southern flight.

The silent drama diminished me.
I, a mortal, with mortal fantasy,
Mere dust on an orb of sky and sea;
This orb mere dust of a galaxy.
