The Black Pagoda

Situated in the state of Odisha,
It still glorifies India's ancient era.
It was dedicated to the Sun God Surya,
Being one of the wonders of India.
Built in the form of a gigantic chariot,
It's exquisite stone sculptures captivate us a lot.
Unfortunately the main sanctum collapsed,
And it's exact reason is still in dark.
Renovations are periodically done to keep it upright,
The temple is an UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Durga Puja

copyright© shonima burman

The blue sky with wispy clouds,
And the birds singing aloud,
The autumn season inviting Goddess Durga,
With happiness followed by a five-days Puja.
The milky white beauty of the ''kaash phool'',
Creating a perfect ambiance of the festival to it's full.
The Goddess finally arrives,
To shower her blessings on our lives.
She is represented in the form of killing a devil,
And it's our belief that she drives away all the evils.
From Sasthi followed by Saptami, Ashtami and Nabami,
The idol of the Goddess is finally immersed in Ganga on Dashami.
The last day is followed by sharing sweets,
And the people awaits another long year for her to arrive.

City of Joy

copyright© shonima burman

Situated on the bank of Hooghly River,
This ''City Of Joy'' is full of wonder.
From ancient monuments to modern architecture,
The city flourishes with astonishing sculptures.
Capital of the Indian state of West Bengal,
The city of Calcutta warmly invites one and all.
Once formed by combining three villages,
Kalikata, Gobindapur and Sutanuti down the ages.
Today it is one of the biggest metropolitan city,
Being enriched in culture and diversity.
Kolkata is its modern name,
Yet it's ancient glamour remains all the same.
I am really proud to be a Calcuttan,
As I am proud to be an Indian.

Pink Rose

copyright© shonima burman

When I woke up in the morning,
I found something amazing!
A beautiful pink rose in my garden
Aroused happiness in me all of a sudden.
It's petals were soft and tender,
And the green stems were long and slender.
Swayed in the soft breeze,
And silently stole all other beauties.
I could not turn away my eyes from it,
Because it's my pink rose, and I love it.

Coming Back Home

Countless falling of leaves bit by bit,
Out of my window I stare everyday.
Memories of my home haunts me,
In the lonely hours of the day.
Nevertheless I console my soul,
Gonna meet everyone soon.
Bewildered and puzzled,
After all its been ages.
Counting days and nights,
Knowing that my home is sheer fine.
Home where my soul lies,
Often in my dream I cherish,
Me, the most happiest I suppose,
Entering my home in due course.

My Sweet Mom

copyright© shonima burman

Bright, beautiful and strong,
She is my sweet mom.
Dark is her eyes and bright is her complexion,
Her long flowing hair captures everybody's attention.
Loving, caring and flawless at her duty,
She is the perfect Indian beauty.
She nurtured me with immense love and care,
And always protected me from every evil and unfair.
I learned to appreciate this life from her,
Mom, you are just superb and I love you forever.

The Night Hooter

copyright© shonima burman

In the deep darkness of night,
They complete their silent flight.
With a flat face and forward facing eyes,
They rotate their head and neck upto 270 degrees.
Despite having binocular vision,
Their eyes are completely immobile in action.
Ear tufts are meant for camouflage and aggression,
These birds are shrewd and quick in predation.
With ears set asymmetrically on their skull,
These carnivorous birds have coloration mostly dull.
Mainly live on eating insects and small rodents,
They constitute an important part of the ecosystem.
They create a wide variety of vocalization,
They are an unique wonder of God's creation!

Escapade On Mars

copyright© shonima burman

Suddenly the tallest mountain set on fire,
And I suddenly leaped three times higher,
Oh God, I wondered ''Is this your wrath''?
But wait, wait, I guessed that was not Earth!
There was a beautiful sunrise,
But the sun was half of it's size.
Barren yet beautiful, red yet dull,
Perhaps existence of life was also null.
I could not believe my own eyes,
Oh,God, that was Mars to my surprise!
But how did I come here?
My mind stopped working in utter fear.
Suddenly a martian man stood by my side,
And observed me in utter surprise.
Then he started nodding his head,
His whole body seemed to be painted in red.
Tears started rolling down my cheeks,
Being sure that I was in high risk.
Minutes within his fellows joined him,
They talked in their own language, it seemed.
Together they leaped three times,
And sung a song similar to our rhymes.
At this point they seemed harmless,
And they tried to make me their friend I guess.
I also nodded my head and leaped three times,
And tried to sing a song in the form of rhyme.
It worked magically and I became their friend,
Through gestures, nodding we interacted till the end.
We came to know each other,
And we had fun altogether.
Now it was time for me to return to Earth,
Where everybody was eagerly waiting for my birth.

Joan of Arc

In the midst of ''Hundred Years War'',
This young colleen was confident and dare.
Born as a peasant girl in the village of Domremy,
She dared to lead the French army.
As a young lass she witnessed visions from God,
To establish the right king and to expel the odd.
She was never taught to read and write,
However she became proficient in fight.
In this battle between the English and the French,
She gave her best leadership out of her benevolence.
After wining great victory in the battle of Orleans,
She and her army successfully crowned Charles as the King of France.
But soon she fell in the hands of the Burgundians,
Who sold her to the English, and the later took Joan as a prisoner.
This nineteen years old girl was burnt alive,
While she was yelling loudly the name of the Christ.
Her cooled ashes were scattered in Seine River,
ALAS! Joan is no more, she got immortalized forever.
