Saving Daylight

Suppose for a moment you live in a land,
Amazed at what happens during summer solstice.
Very strange things begin to occur,
Instantly, there is little darkness,
Night that we are so used to
Gone; what is left is the brilliant colors.

Daylight from dusk to dawn to dusk again,
Alight in all its energy and brightness.
Yes, we are north of the sixtieth parallel;
Land of the midnight sun.
I have been here before and seen things,
Gazed upon the horizon, waiting for darkness to reappear,
Holding on to summer in all its life, love and beauty;
To see it ebb once more as daylight fades to night.

God Save the Queen

Golden Jubilee passed over a decade ago,
Our monarch still vibrant and strong,
Diamond Jubilee at hand, and still she reigns on.

Swore an oath to Her Majesty, to defend her land,
Air Force uniform I donned while preserving freedom.
Valour, just one aspect of a warrior’s ethos.
Eternal is my loyalty to Queen Elizabeth II -

The Queen of Canada, our British Monarch supreme.
Her Majesty, a fellow sister-in-arms, a mechanic in WWII,
Endless inspiration to the future generations.

Quintessential woman, she shows us her strength,
Unique in her duties, now mostly symbolic,
Evermore the figurehead.
Everlasting, her legacy will stand,
Namesake for her newest great-grandchild.

Out of Water: Bataan

We left the barracks in mid-March,
With snow still on the ground,
Drove two days across the border,
To participate in a multi-national event,
Commemorating the World War II atrocities,
The Japanese called Death Marches.
Our soldiers, sailors, and airmen,
Were marched relentlessly across the Philippines.
Bataan Death March,
Where only the strongest survived.
Today I march for them,
For fallen comrades,
Recognizing their sacrifices.
Freedom’s price so high, paid with our brothers lives.
Here I am, out of water, as I march through the deep sands;
Bataan Memorial Death March,
Where quitting is not my option,
As my brothers marched without choice.
Wounded warrior, I suffered through dehydration,
Through pain in joints already injured in service to my country.
Out of water, I did not worry, for I knew;
The human body’s capability to survive,
For days on end in relentless conditions,
I marched on, to the end…

A Hike In the Forest

Forest floor covered, footsteps echo of breaking branches
Sunlight trying to break through cover, unyielding in defiance
Small animals scurry out of sight, hiding in the trees.

Pilot

Pilot
Flying faster
Pushing limits always
Shattering the sound barrier
Flyer

Northern Lights

Red and green hues light the sky at night, making hissing sounds
Unbelievable, their movements cascading and delighting us
Northern lights it has been called; the Aurora Borealis.

Man and Horse Compared

Seeing sculpture compared to painting
Contrasted imagery alluding to victory
With victor being both man and animal
Subservience dominates both images
Bare head and feet noticeable to viewer
A horse head raised; the other lowered
Who are these men and beasts?
Smug facial expression common to both
Though can a horse hold airs superior
To rider upon his back, dominated?
Both larger than life, one four legged
One dressed aristocratically, they stand
Victorious in unknown battle, while other
Remains forever weary, worn, and tired
We shall never know their stories
Their images captured for posterity
Eternally the dominant and dominated
Two men and two horses compared
Two lives and circumstances contrasted
Beasts and their mounts and masters
Of human flesh; of horse flesh together
Beautiful this artwork upon mine soul.

Air Show

Plane
Flies
Higher
Inverted
Air show on Sunday!
Crowds of people line the airfield
Watching in excitement as coloured smoke fills the sky.
