The Glass Slipper

"The Glass Slipper"

I was waiting for a glass slipper
For my prince in shining armor
to take me away from my sorrow
into my happily ever after.
I sat around wishing on stars;
Kissing frogs wherever I went;
Dropping coins in wishing wells;
Waiting for true love's kiss.
It was only after he never came
that I realized what it all meant.
Magic is not naturally present,
but created through love for another
I did not encounter magic until I looked in my daughter's eyes;
Did not get my fairy-tale until I worked toward a better life.
I learned happily ever after does not exist,
not in the way we imagine.
It does not mean princes balls, and perfect hair,
but the feeling of fulfillment that follows
a life well spent caring for others
and pursing the dreams we had hoped to achieve
So don't be like me.
Do not wait for your prince to come for you.
Create your own happy ending
and I promise it will come true.

The Monster In My Head

"The Monster in my Head"

Do you know what it's like
to hear voices at night?
The kind that keep you awake.

You may fall asleep,
yet it's anything but peaceful
as the screams penetrate into dreams.

The thoughts and fears you keep inside
come alive and refuse to leave,
as they voice what you've tried so hard to hide.

Pills will not help; alcohol only delays
There is no escape from the voice;
Listening is no longer a choice.

I just want rest, a moment of peace.
Silence the voices.
Save me, please.

When I Grow Up

"When I Grow Up"

When I was five, I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I told them I wanted to be a princess.

When I was eight, I wanted to be a waitress.

When I was twelve: a teacher.

When I was sixteen: a doctor.

Now when asked what I want to be in the near future,

I know exactly how to respond.

I want to be happy.

The Wilted Flower

“The Wilted Flower”

I have a distant memory
Which increasingly fades with time
Of a seemingly different life
when I was happy without strife
I smiled without guilt
I loved and accepted all
I did not care what others thought
Because I liked myself
But then I let the world in
My tragic and grievous mistake
If I could go back, I'd change my choice
And not succumb to their sweet, but poisonous words
They could not stand it
Seeing me so joyous
Didn't you know
that love is dangerous?
Fearing the power that I contained through this beautiful feeling
They convinced me I would be better off if I fit in
They pointed out my flaws
Made me feel worthless
Broke me down beyond repair
Then rebuilt me in their image
Like a flower shielded from the sun, I began to wilt
I changed into a person I could no longer recognize
No longer the person I wanted to be, but the person others told me I should be
I became tired, dazed, drained, defeated
Lost in a hellish maze with no escape
I gave in
Did what they told me
Listened to them
Became a perfect copy
Now I am skinny
                and pretty
                       and
                            dead inside.

Letting Him Go

"Letting Him Go"

There's a boy I know
Who, everyday, crushes my soul.
His silence is deafening,
a reminder of my past mistakes.
His ghost all around me,
anchoring me to his memory.

I loved this boy;
I still do.
Not as a wife loves her husband,
but as a mother loves her son.

He lives in my dreams,
he exists in my tears.
I wake with him on my mind;
I lie awake, his words echoing in my ears.
The hope that he will one day call will not die,
no matter how hard I may try.

I no longer need him,
I've learned to survive alone.
But I want him here so dearly
that I'd do anything for just one more hug.

I miss his voice;
his laugh even more.
But I'll keep my distance
because he wishes it so.
And isn't that what love is?
Loving enough to let him go.

I Control My Life, Not You

"I Control my Life, not You"

You haunt my nightmares
You never leave my mind
I see you everywhere
You left me in a constant state of fear.

You opened a healing wound
You stole something I cannot get back
I feel damaged and detatched
You do not apologize or care.

You are able to live your life
You go on as if nothing happened
I do not have that luxury
You will never comprehend what you’ve done.

You make me so angry
You make me so sad
I hate myself because of you
You probably find satisfaction in that.

You may think you have power because I fear you
You may feel you have won
I am here to tell you that this is not true
You will never control me no matter what you do.

Isn'T Love

"Isn't Love..?"

Isn't love a funny thing?
It has the power to free us or break us down.

Isn't love a deceitful trickster?
The way it masks the truth and blinds reality.

Isn't love an amazing thing?
It allows us to reach Heaven through another.

Isn't love humbling?
It reveals our weaknesses, yet balances them through another's strengths.

Isn't love an emotion like no other?
Full of passion; of intensity.

Isn't love quite crazy?
We put our hearts on the line fully knowing the strong possibility of it being broken.

Isn't love impossible to describe?
We often only notice it once it is gone.

Isn't love what we are all looking for?
Isn't love the answer we hope solves all our problems?
Isn't love disappointing when it doesn't?

Ana

"Ana"

Ana tells me how to feel.
Ana tells me what to wear.
Ana is the dark in me;
the cross I have to bear.

She fills my days and haunts my nights.
She always wins no matter how hard I fight.

I hate her, but I love her too.
I know I shouldn't, but I do.

Ana controls my thoughts; my actions too.
Ana yells, she screams, until I put down the food.
Ana does not quit even when she's won.
Ana will not be silenced until the job is done.

She is a parasite who feasts as I starve.
She takes all I have without guilt.
She only dies when I have no more to give.
She fades only as I wilt.

Bleeding Into Numbness

"Bleeding into Numbness"

There I go again...FEELING.
I promised I'd never do that again.
              Stupid girl.
I need to stop.
How can I stop this?
I need to be numb.
I won't let this happen again.
I won't let them hurt me.
Don't feel.
              DON'T FEEL.
I know how to stop this.
I'll do it real quick.
      Slice on this side;
                                   One more here
and
  I
    am...
