To a Former Friend

I dedicate this poem to you,
The one who I used to call "friend",
"Best friend", or maybe even "sister".
Yes, you meant that much to me,
And I thought I meant as much to you.
No, maybe not as much, but at least a "best friend".
Did I ask for too much?
Was that too selfish of a request?
I thought that we'd be best friends forever,
I really did.
But I guess it was all just a fantasy,
A fragment of my imagination.
After all, reality is a much harsher place.
I think I only realized that after you walked away;
After you walked away and never looked back
And left me in a deep, dark pit of torment,
Wondering why you'd changed.
If I'd done something different, would you still be the same?
Of all the people beside me, I never would have guessed that
You would be the one to leave me like this.
And as I watched from a mile away,
How well off you seemeed without me,
I fell into a sea of depression.
For the longest time,
I felt so lonely,
Questioning myself whether anyone truly needed me.
Or was I only just second choice?
Now, as I am writing this poem,
I cannot say that I have been completely healed.
I still feel the doubt, the uncertainty,
When someone says
"I love you"
Or
"You are my best friend"
Even when I know that it is all in my head.
But I think I can say with confidence that
I have become stronger,
Even if just a little bit,
Even though sometimes
I still miss you.

Red

I think sometimes we are more enemies than friends.
When we scream at each other, I think about how much I hate those dark brown eyes of yours.
Your hair are soft downy feathers that I wish I had.
The way you speak your mind to me is like a river, carrying fish but also debris.
We disagree over the smallest things, neither of us willing to back down and determined to have the last say, no matter how insignificant they are.
Your childish personality often clash with mine.
You don't ask, but my favorite socks will somehow end up on your feet.
I wish I can turn back time to the way we were before.
The two of us were like puppies, playful and inseparable.
I remember our balloons being blown away, sailing up into the blue and beyond.
Hand in hand, we'd walk into school, only letting go when we go our separate ways.
We'd play outside even in the musky, gray fog.
You once defended me like your life depended on it.
I miss those times.
But I love you anyway; even though at times you make me see red.

Spring

Trees in bloom
Winter's doom
Birds fly high
Against the sky
Endless shower
Season's power
Will amaze you
Through and through
As the light
Warm and bright
From the sun
Dance and run
Atop some trees
Or float on bees
Across a plain
Or in lion's mane
You will feel the power of
Mother Spring's forever love.

Sung

Tears that
Sings upon contact
Of long-ago songs
Of grief and joy.
We forgot the words
And the music
And even their existence
But the tears remembered.
Encased in each droplet before
Connecting on a surface
And exploding in a thousand
More drops and
The music flies free.
Rain.

Bill of Rights

Words of power, words of might
This is called our Bill of Rights

Religion, assembly, petition, press and speech
To never take away these rights Amendment 1 does teach

A well regulated militia, right to keep and bear our arms
Amendment 2 gave us these rights to keep us far from harm

No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in our home
As promised by Amendment 3 we will be left alone

The threat to search us as a people without a probable cause
Amendment 4 gives us the right to deny without a pause

No person shall be subject to the same offense twice
For Amendment 5 objects to it, firmly and precise

In criminal prosecutions, there should be speedy trials
For Amendment 6 has declared that should be our style

Should another owe me in cash that's more than twenty
By Amendment 7 I can sue him all the plenty

Cruel and unusual punishments should never be inflicted
Because by Amendment 8 these actions are restricted

Should my common rights be taken in any shape or form
I will know in Amendment 9 that this is not the norm

Powers not the government's shall belong to us the states
Amendment 10 will allow no one to decide upon our fate

Words of power, words of might
This is called our Bill of Rights.

Every Soul a Star

Ever soul is like a star
Even though we're far apart:
One day life will kindle it's flame
In star and human, all the same.
Every moment we live longer,
Getting tougher, getting stronger.
Until our inner light shines through
And win back what we used to lose.
Til we're down on our last breath
And who's come for us but himself, Death.
A hole we'll leave when we have gone
Yours in space float upon
While mine is in my dear kin's hearts;
Every soul is like a star.

Don'T Blink

Looks at the world with curious eyes
The only purpose is to feed and sleep
Responds happily to gentle touch
Babes don't see the world deep.

Learning to try and succeed
Learning to try and fail
Emitting their first sounds with meaning
Toddlers for the world set sail.

Putting pen to paper and making crooked shapes
That grown ups call words
No worries yet for them to face
Children still free as birds.

Temptations, pressure, worries, and stress
Longing, loss, and first loves
Wondering what is in store for them
Teenagers reach for stars above.

Jobs and children keeping them busy
Responsibilities on their backs
Spouse and friends' loves keeping them strong
Adult's burden only slightly slack.

Looking back at all those years
Of joy and laughter and pain
Elders say don't blink your eyes
Or you'll miss the whole darn thing.

Like a Small Boat

Like a small boat
In the vast sea
Bow and aft
Sits you and me
Conquering storms
Breaching waves
Riding whirlpools
Together we stayed
Until one day
A crack begins
The side of our boat
An unforgiving sin
Silently growing
Day and night
But we cannot fix
This scary sight
Larger and longer
A poisonous snake
Becoming too much
For our boat to take
Splitting apart
You in bow, me in aft
The current carries us
In it's endless laugh
Apart, apart
In the waves
Our halves of the boat
Riding farther away
You from me
And me from you
I look out
And reach for you
But we're too far
Winds too strong
Sea too vast
An endless song
To this day
I keep trying to find
You and your half
Our boat still whines
For it's bow is missing
Torn from it's aft
Will not be whole
Until finding your half
But all your footprints
Leads away
And I know that you
Plan to stay that way
Like water and oil
You keep us apart
While I keep trying to fix it
You keep breaking my heart.

Links of Chain

Links of chain intertwine
Strong and sturdy, all one of a kind
Some may break with the passing of time
But the ones that hold are true lifelines.

Rival

You are my friend, my family, and my little sister
I never thought one day that I'll give your name a twister.

I remember when it was and how it had began
You'd shown me a drawing excitedly and I had tasted sand.

Asked me if it was good enough and what I thought of it
I thought it was done exquisitely and felt my eyebrows knit.

We had always been sketching, ever since I could remember
And yet I never once did think that you would become the better.

I did not know what the feeling was until a few days after
When you handed me another picture and the air rang with your laughter.

You were so happy and so proud, and I very pleased with you too
But somewhere deep inside unsatisfaction started to brew.

It was moments later when I declared a war
"From now on you are my rival, and I won't let you pass by far!"

But you only shook your head and said that I was weird
That kind of apathetic reaction was worse than I had feared.

Nonetheless I stood my ground, although sometimes it kills
Because you'd made me recognise your given artistic skills.
