Inspire

You've been so great
so loving and caring
always ready with your wits

I love it, I love you
But wait, don't say a word
Today I want to inspire you

When I'm down, or lost, or confused
There you are
Saving my mind from a black hole

No, don't say it
I told you, hush
Today I'm going to make your dreams come true

You have shone through my life
I will cary your essence always
I will make you last forever

Held within my heart for guidance
I will write you down on paper
I will make the world be inspired by you

Ode To Art

A timeless face set in smooth, hard skin gazes
Out across a sea of framed majesty created by human hands.
Dreams, which have been carefully formed to
Enter into the realm of reality and take
It’s viewer’s breath away. The statue
Looks at art and is art and addresses art,

Art, you are everything and can be made with
So many things previously thought of as nothing.
Possibilities stretch up and down the rabbit
Hole of imagination. Having tea in mid air doesn’t
Seem so rare anymore. Or sky in the middle of the ocean
And someone lounging on a couch on the ceiling, hair floating upward.

I can draw a picture of spring with you,
Blend warmth and a light breeze on the page
In black and white with my charcoal finger.
Or tear apart an image only to put it back together in
A new unimaginable way, or create a new world
An enchanted forest, a thousand hands as trees reaching toward the sun…

The possibilities are endless

A Thousand Splendid Suns Part 1

My name is Mariam
Does it matter?
From the beginning I was doomed
A harami in a Muslim world
A world where a girl has no rights
Where a harami has even fewer
I am a slave in a man's world
My mother, Nana, tried to tell me
I didn't listen.
Too caught up in the world of Jalil
My father, but me not his daughter
Through my experiences I have learned
Like Nana said, Persevere
There is little happiness
In a world where nothing is fair.

Bath Time

Ducky, are you here?
To splish and splash in the bath
Can't go without you

Puzzle

A piece of ocean next to trees and sand
Scattered across treated mahogany.
Across a face, and a ship now unmanned,
And rolling waves, fingers trip sloppily.
Splitting the pile into organized stacks
Here end pieces, there yellow, and here blue.
Out of nowhere a playful cat attacks!
Ocean falls like rain, every piece but two
The cat bounds away leaving destruction.
Scattered pieces, mangled ship thrown on beach
Nothing but a picture for instruction.
Marching forth, I took the puzzle by siege
Gradually the pieces come together
And are ready for your viewing pleasure

Morning

Sometimes in the winter my teeth will chatter
Getting out of bed makes such a clatter
waking up is no fun when all I want is the warmth of my blanket

But, although waking up is never fun
The new day beacons, come, come
Opportunities await
Invigorating is the new day
Swimming, weightlifting, learning new things

If no one got out of bed, what would this world be?
Unproductive, sad, and gloomy
Is that how you want to see our future?

Feeding Time

My breath floats through the dancing beam of my flashlight.
Footsteps, quick and light, mixed with excited panting of the four legged
Friend beside me. A soft braying greets us from the darkness.

Warm bottle in one hand, I set down the bucket
That smells of sweet molasses to gather
Corn which sounds like rain as it falls into the trough.

Jumping the fence I flip a switch, shedding
Full light on smiling faces for the first time
Today. Happy bleating bounds toward me.

Pushing through a menagerie of warm bodies, I move
To deposit the old horse’s breakfast in his oversized bowl and then
Turn my attention to the lamb who has been at my heels the whole time.

I kneel down stroking her soft wool as she sucks down the formula
Caving in the sides of the pink bottle.
But my attention is in high demand.

The barn cat complains that it is her turn
And before long a long eared head, the size of my torso,
Is nudging my shoulder...

Smiling,
I walk back in the early morning light.

Sparkling Stars, Shining Sun

The sky would be dark if it weren't for stars
They sparkle in the night with their brilliance
The stars twinkle with light, they leave no scars
Overcoming clouds with resilience
With them is a dazzling, bright, glowing moon
They beam down at a peaceful empty street
Waiting, knowing that the sun will come soon
The moon stays so she and the sun can meet
But the moon must go as the sun glows bright
The brightness reigns as the sun takes the stage
The day begins and once more rules the light
The red in the sky, the color of rage
Reflects the chaos of a new day
"We are much better," the stars always say

Painted Sky

When I looked outside my window
There was a man painting snow
I asked him "Are you friend or foe?"
And he laughed and ran away

In his hand he had a paintbrush
In the other, a painted pail
Running up onto an invisible rail
He leapt up to the sky, hand outstretched high.

I saw his brush strokes trailing black
I cried, "Stop! Don't do that!
I don't want today to end
I have chores and things to mend"

Once more his laughter came
And he drew out a gnarly cane
Dipping the end into the pail
And left silver stars in a trail

Then he used his brush again
Curving a line to meet its end
Forming a moon that was gleaming
I am certain she was beaming

Then the man ran once more
And through the black he tore
Leaving a silver stream of light behind
As the words, make a wish, echoed through my mind
