One Poetic Night

It was a cold and brisk
February night I stepped outside
To take a short stroll to the dumpster.
The sky was clear, almost starless.
Waves of muffled car engines
Whispered by every now and again
Just opposite the tree line
Behind my abode.
Parking lot and street lights
Kept their nightly vigil assuring
Safe passage to all who crossed
Beneath their path.
Late night flights flashed their lights
As they begin final approach
Like a beacon in the midnight sky.
Randomly lit windows throughout
The complex buildings keep
Night owls company as
Hours grow later.
I smile as I bask in
The night’s symphony
Waves of muffled car engines
Whispering every now and again.
Hearing only my footsteps as they
Echo between the walls
The creaking of my door brings
A rush of welcomed heat
As it lovingly hugs me
And I lock my door.
In a final sigh of relaxation
I kick off my shoes and retreat
Back to my nightly comfort zone
My couch, my drink and my pen
On this cold and brisk poetic night.

Watching the Sunset In Maui

Pictures shared over the airwaves
Palm trees giving ever so gently
To tropical breezes are captured
As our forever moment in time.
With each sunrise comes the
Rich greens, soothingly calming blues
And gently comforting whites.
A breathtaking scenery of a canvas
Of unimaginable creation.
With each setting sun comes
Enriched hues of the primaries.
Blended reds, oranges,
Yellows and blues create stunning
Mixtures of color in and about the
Horizon slowly overtaking daylight
Seemingly setting the clouds ablaze.
The ocean mimics with darker tones
As the sky slowly closes its eye upon
Us holding our hearts just a bit longer.
Daily repetition allows us to
Visualize its blessing in the
Hopes of acceptance and
Appreciation of what we have,
Are given and are given in return.
Watching the sun set in Maui
Would be an unforgettable experience
But for now it remains as an
Instant snapshot of time and place
In present time zone’s past allowing
Visions of an everlasting
Memory bring a smile to my face
And peace in my heart
All in part due to the kindness of
A dear friend and his giving soul.
This in itself has been an
Amazingly wonderful experience.
Thank you for sharing with me
This beautiful sunset in Maui.

Thank you Jerry.

At First Glance

From the first moment I saw you
Some way, somehow I knew
That you were the one for me
And I was the one for you.

I couldn't put my finger on it
I wasn't sure exactly what to feel.
Whatever it was, it felt damn good
That's when I knew it was real.

What was the connection?
Why was this vibe so strong?
Had this been the love
I've been waiting for so long?

Apparently so I thought
So I decided to take a chance.
When I kissed you I could tell
You were mine at first glance.

All the right feelings
In the wrong places
Trying ever so desperately
Not to leave any traces

Behind, lying around or otherwise
Only trying to bide my time
Until the one I was in love with
Would once and for all be mine.

So therefore we must
Be careful with each stance
Especially when you feel
The love at first glance.

Love Reunited

Hey there friend!
Long time no see
I'm still around
Whenever you need me.
I know it's been a while
Since we last talked
And even longer
Since we last walked
Together down the hard road
Even when we weren't getting along
Just a matter of miscommunication
Being on different pages of the song.
Here we are once again
Standing at the fork in the road
Allow me to help you this time
And share the burden of your load.
We have to pull together
Not push apart
We can take this road one step
At a time and mend our broken hearts.
It wasn't easy when I first saw you
I just wanted to turn away
Then Jesus intervened and opened my eyes
I didn't know what to say.
I did thank Him though
For sending you back to me
Even after all this time
Things will be different, you'll see.
What I'm trying to say
Is now I know
Why it was
You had to go.
It was too painful
For you to stay
As we remained
Set and steadfast in our ways.
Neither one of us willing to give in or
Give up nor wanting to budge
Instead we acted like children
And chose to hold a grudge.
Now that the tension
Has finally been broken
Can we put the past behind us
And let the negative remain unspoken?
We've been given a second chance
To try and set things straight
We have to live for this moment
Before it's too late.
So what do you say?
Let's try this again
And stick with it
Until the very end.

A Cry For Help

There's a man I saw just the other day
However I don't know his name
He was of Hispanic decent I know
But we never spoke just the same.
He was talking to his lawyer
That day about his court case
I felt his pain and anguish
As I looked him in his face.
I could tell he was sorry for what he did
Because even the strongest can become meek
He looked like the drugs he did had done him in
Like cancer to a person so frail and weak.
Prison life doesn't do anything for him
And he doesn't want to do drugs anymore
He wants to move from the city to start over again
I really hope he gets what he asks for.
His lawyer said he'd do what he could
To answer his client's request
I wanted to shake his hand as my heart
Went out to wish him all the best.
I don't know what held me back
From saying how I felt
I guess I just chose to remain silent
Because I really didn't know how to help.
So where ever you are, my brother
I hear you; I hear you loud and clear
If there were ever a way I could help you
It would be to first lend a listening ear.

The Night Watchman

When the night falls
And the moon is up high,
You can be rest assured the
Night watchman will be stopping by.

As he does each and every night
When we all go to bed
This is at a time when our comfort
Is most needed so we can rest our heads.

After a long hard days work
After a busy and stressful day,
Whatever the case may be
The night watchman is here to stay.

His role is the greatest of all
His position no man can hold
He’ll never fault at his duties
He watches over all both young and old.

As we go about our daily lives
Day after day night after night
The night watchman is always working
At any given time not once losing sight.

Of every man, woman and child
On any given day as they each come anew
No, he’s not alone he has an army
Of angels as his crew.

Keeping tabs on everyone and everything
Even creatures great and small,
There’s no such thing as out of sight
When the night watchman is on call.

So no matter who, where or what we are
Even if a word is never to be spoken
The night watchman’s eyes and ears
For you and I will always be open.

The Quiet Warrior

The quiet warrior resides
In the soul of a man
Who fights with his heart
Instead of his hands.

For all things loved
Leaving no stone unturned
Going toe to toe till the bitter end
For this right he has earned.

Holding steadfastly to his faith
He stands before us all
Leading, making a way
Always there to answer the call.

He may never show emotion
He may never show any pain
He may never voice his opinion
But his presence alone will remain.

Forever engraved in our minds
And deeply locked in our souls
A constant reminder of who we are
As we live out our daily roles.

Behold your quiet warrior
Stand by and with him true
Take heed to his purpose and destiny
And he will live to fight for you.

Shadow Rock

Where the waves break
And sea foam rises
The crisp sound of the ocean
Echoes in the cavernous openings
Of private oceanside caves.
Waters rise and recede
As time passes through.
Sunlit moments slightly shaded
By rock shadows floating by.
Caressed by tropical breezes,
Spritzed in salt waters,
My soul is peacefully content
In this wide open space
Where the skies and water kiss
The infinite horizon,
And the message recording says:
“We’re sorry but the person
You’re trying to reach has been
Temporarily disconnected
From the outside world,
If you think you’ve reached
This message in error,
Please try again later and
Thank you for calling.”
The day ages ever so slightly
As hues of red, orange and yellow
Lay upon the ocean surface.
The rock’s peaks and
The cave’s light begin to dissipate
Giving way to their nightly rest time.
The sun and moon
Will relieve each other’s posts.
The tide is rising at Shadow Rock
As the ocean slowly takes a breath.
Inhaling the cool night air
The ocean and sky darken to
The last color of the spectrum.
The moon brightens to a
Xenon white night light
To highlight the crests of waves
As they race to and from
The land’s edge.
Only to exhale at daybreak, it
Gives the caves back
Their illuminations
As its echoes sing a morning lullaby.
Caressed by tropical breezes,
Spritzed in salt waters,
My soul is peacefully content
In this wide open space
Where the skies and water kiss
The infinite horizon,
Shadow Rock regains its namesake
As calls remain unanswered.
At least for now.

Reformation of Character

I’ve been down this road
So many times before
I often wonder if at the end
Will there be an open door?

What seemed to be
What I thought once was
A hopeless dream, in fact
A totally lost cause.

Is now actually a series of events
Coming to fruition
But in a more peaceful, loving
And different rendition.

Is this my chance to try again?
To set things right with my life?
Or is it just a visualization?
Of what could’ve been perhaps an insight?

Only time will tell as the
Fragmented pieces fall into place
Making a difference and a change
In my life as the memories give chase.

Being sure to keep up
Not ever to be missed
But yet called upon at a moments notice
So I can reminisce.

Whenever I feel down and out
Like I lost my friend,
I can reach back into my mind
To smile and laugh once again.

You see, that’s the thing about
Memories both good and bad
They will always be there for you
Whenever you’re happy or sad.

They level the playing field of your mind
Keeping everything on an even keel
Especially those times when
You’re not sure what or how you feel.

Life is full of ups and downs
As well as trials and tribulations
It’s up to us as individuals
To know when and how to set the stipulations.

When we reach that final chapter
And the last page has been turned
You can stop, look back and say
Wow, this is what I’ve learned

Now take this and share it with everyone
Even those you may not know,
So we all as individuals and
A collective will continue to grow.

Reflections

Mirrored images of ourselves
In the water, in others,
In the window glass
Of the building as we walk by
Captured just for a moment
Until we stop and stare
And look deep into our eyes.
Our souls temporarily in stasis
To allow a glimpse, a glance
Or perhaps a good long look
Of what is and remembering what was
As if we were an open book.
A look back into time
Of the ways we were
The good, the bad, the indifferent
All the changes we went through
Basking in the glory of how
We managed to get through it all
As the day comes anew.
A smile peers from our lips
When we think back in time
Of that special someone
That made and impact
In our daily life, the one who
Kept us glued together making sure
Everyone and thing stayed in tact.
A teardrop surfaces
Glides down our cheek
As memories of loved ones lost
Refill our minds, visit our dreams
To ease our pains, give us the strength
To move on no matter what the cost.
So as we slowly come back into focus
All the memories reclaim their rightful place
Back in time for future detection
The stasis releases us back to the present
And allows us to fully understand
The true meaning of reflection.
