Little Angel

A little angel came to earth
But long she could not stay
Heavenly Father called her home
With the angels there to play.

She touched the hearts of many
And we will never be the same
She'll be remembered always
Whenever we say her name.

She was a perfect angel
In our hearts she'll always be
For now she sits with Jesus
Happy on His knee.

So though our hearts are heavy
And many tears fill our eyes
We hold her memory always close
She's waiting in Paradise.

So when you see a butterfly
Or look up at the sky
You know she's up there waiting
Till we can be there at her side.

Heart Twist

Early this morning, sitting in my car,
Watching my son at swim team practice,
I see the flash and splash of water
Arms slicing in perfect synchonicity.

The sun glints off their shimmering bodies,
The kids' movement through the water, cleaving,
Their faces almost beatific, as if they are giding on a silvery path
which opens up before them, allowing smooth passage.

The smell of chlorine, wet cement and sunscreen
Wafts through my nostrils, bringing memories of a distant time
(mothers waiting for dripping offspring, dry towels ready)
Piercing my total being with bittersweet longing.

My son heads in my direction and my attention
Is grabbed by his youthfulness and innocence,
Still a boy, not yet a man, my small man-child is
Caught in the middle somewhere between the two.

Big smile on his sun-freckled face
Blond hair tinged green with chlorine,
Skinny arms and legs akimbo,
Couldn't be more beautiful to me.

I give his sun-warmed body a brief squeeze
Before he pulls away, embarrassed, but
I see a small smile appear on his lips as his eyes meet mine,
And I am happily content.

These moments are sweetly fleeting,
But are stored in my heart forever.

Lullaby

Sleep, little one, sleep
Dreaming your baby dreams
Floating on clouds of cottony white
With a blanket as soft as cream.

Conversing with the angels
Most of whom you know
You know your way around the place
You were not long ago.

Soon you'll waken from your nap
And leave that blessed place
Ethereal wisps of heavenly wings
Still clinging round your face.

Keep Going

She pulls herself up
Like she's always done
Get back into it
Face the rising sun.

Life is a series of choices
And options to decide
Very important matters
From which you cannot hide.

Though her life is hard now
She knows it won't be long
The cover of clouds will clear
And then she'll hear the song

Of the angels that watch over
Her silently as she sleeps
To ease her mind, soften her steps,
Make promises she can keep.
