Angel

I think about you
as much as the bullets in my gun.
You were the only one
who took away my edge.

So tattered and torn,
I couldn’t keep it together,
couldn’t mend my own wounds
till the day I met love.

I opened my eyes;
an angel stared back in mine.
I unloaded my gun
and handed the bullets over to you.

I’m here for you now, because of you.
You showed me the light
while surrounded by dark,
showed me that it’s always there.

And if I ever fail
or give up the strength
to remember this light,
throw the bullets I gave
back at my side,
leaving me to do what I was bound to do – without you.

You always told me
the dark consumes me
because I won’t let it go
and accept that light can change things.

Whether it’s white or black, light or dark,
it’s the way I make it, ultimately--
But without you
I would have never let go.

Then I saw you in the place I was,
on a white hospital bed
with that too familiar sound
and needles in your arms.
You were there but so far gone.

I held your hand,
and felt a way I never did before.
My life changed right there
after seeing the light drained from your soul.

And as the light
came back into your eyes,
I knew it wasn’t the end,
but just the beginning of our happy years to come.

Now every morning
we sit and watch the sun rise,
remembering that the light we share
will always consume the dark that was.

Death's Encounter

Today there's something strange in the air
taking lives without a care.
Thoughts of suicide and death,
of inhaling one last breath.

Oh what a gloomy day
headed down a dark pathway.
So many faces dead and gone.
Will the world last to inhale another dawn?

Today I paint a smile upon my face
without an ounce or bit of faith.
I watch the world slipping away
as I debate whether or not I shall stay.

The reaper is present here,
bringing an end to all our cheer.
We begin to question our own fate,
but for all we know it may be too late.

Is this the end?
Will us and Death befriend?
Where will we go?
Is it like they always told us so?

Who do we turn to?
What should we do?
So many questions left unanswered.
So many words thought wise now altered.

What will come of the earth once we've died off?
Will everything just shut off?
Maybe our souls will still be here,
but left alone in darkness and pain so severe.

For now just listen up and behold
for we have come to the next threshold
where what's to come is but a mystery,
and you're allowed to bring nothing but your own misery.

The Fight

My ugliness had faded
but you brought it back.
Every weapon made by man
had begun to hack.

Thinking I was something
had become again the past.
You began to drag me down
and succeeded way too fast.

Your hateful words and deeds
spread through me like disease.
Your endless betrayal
brought me to my knees.

But I won't burn in the fire
you plagued me with back then.
I will spring from these ashes
and pray this away again.

No more will this oppression
be the cause of all my pain.
Like cancer I will fight you
and rid myself of this disdain.
