Annie Christensen Poem
The midnight shadows
Stretch and crawl
Across the bedroom floor,
As something heavy
Drags its weight
Outside your locked front door
You press the pillow
To your ears
To drown the scraping sound,
But hear the slow
Deliberate steps
Upon the frozen ground
The iron bolt
Begins to slide,
The rusty hinges trigger,
And through the darkness
Comes a cold,
Familiar, hollow figure
It slips into
The narrow hall
And steps into the dark,
And leaves upon
The hardwood floor
An ash black mark
You hold your breath
And close your eyes,
Pretending you’re asleep,
But through the cracks
Of eyelid light
You see a shadow creep
It towers right
Beside your bed,
A shape without a face,
And fills the cold
And crowded room
With static, dead air space
The blanket pulls
Slowly down from
Your
Chin
Into the
Air
And then you feel
Two frozen hands reach through your tangled hair
The bedroom fades
Muscles freeze
The air goes thin
An attempt to scream fails
No sound comes out
Something touches your skin
A sudden jerk
The mattress tilts
A force pulls onward
The floorboards scrape
The hallway opens
Everything changes
You kick and flail
The rug is ripped
The wall is clawed
The wood splits deep
The grip is iron
The descent begins
Down the stairs
Into the dark
The basement gate
A heavy slam
The lock clicks shut
Time has run out
Have you seen the Hollow Man?
Please oh please
Tell us
We bled for him
We kill for him
To join his clan

Annie Christensen Poem
Scared of my
Not real
Mommy and
Daddy
I hide
In my room
In the dark
I’m Scared
I don’t think they know
I know they aren’t beautiful
At least on the inside
I hope they think I still love them
I slowly get up
I am hungry
I want a snack
Even if I have to see them
I twist the doorknob
Scrunching my forehead
Hoping they are gone
But the door won’t open
Why can’t I leave?
Why Can’t I Leave?
WHY CAN’T I LEAVE?
I don’t want to be alone
But I’m not
My closet has opened
All by itself
Like its trying to show me something
I slowly peer in
Scared for what
I might see
But it’s not scary
It’s my dolly
From a long time ago
So long
I forgot her name
It’s a good thing
She has her nametag
Looking at her scribbled name
I try to sound the word out
Mmm-
Al-
Ice
I think her name is
Mal. Ice
The snow princess
Well now she is my friend
My only friend
At night
Sometimes
Mal will talk to me
She says weird stuff
I know what happened
To your Mommy and
Daddy
Why they disappeared
When she tells me this
It makes me want to stay in here forever
Just me and her
Me and Mal. Ice
Mal. Ice says
She knows how to
Get out of the room
The room I hate
So we try
And it works
I don’t see
Fake Mommy
Or Fake Daddy
Just me
Alone
With
Mal. Ice
After many
Days of talking
And talking
To Mal. Ice
I don’t know
Why she
Suddenly
Does something scary
She turns to me
And she whispers
I know what happened
Because I did it
I run back to my room
The door won’t lock anymore
It won’t lock
WHY WON’T IT LOCK?
I don’t care
My only friend
Isn’t my friend
I’m Alone

Annie Christensen Poem
you
that glowing moonshine
parallel to your reflection
cheerless
but
antic
whispering : unofficially nineteen never
we chase perceptively astounding normalcy

Annie Christensen Poem
As I lay in bed
The unicorns on the blanket
Suddenly don’t look so nice
But not too mean yet either
I wait throughout the night
For my friend to finally come
I stare patiently at the ceiling
Hoping my BFF will show
I
Wait
and
Wait
and
WAIT
Until finally
My closet opens up
I jump and clap
Though quietly
My friend has finally come
We play a lot
Out in the streets
Which makes it hard
To see his face
But that's okay
I don’t like his face
Why?
I Don’t Like His Face
His Face
That has no eyes anymore
Not after he told me
To give them to my neighbor
I don’t see my neighbor anymore
His Face
That has a nose
But only two slitted holes
Instead of a bump
My friend says its for hunting
His Face
That has a really scary mouth
A mouth with super duper long teeth
A mouth with only one purpose
Which is…
Will you tell anyone?
It’s a secret
What his mouth does
The Mouth that eats
The Souls of
My real friends
My mommy and daddy
Anyone I care about
Just because I messed up
Once
Just Once
Just Once for
My friends to be gone
Well, except for one
My Best Friend

Annie Christensen Poem
At dinner today,
My Mommy and
My Daddy
Were being weird
Instead of them
Usually being tired,
They smiled a lot
Too Smiley
And also
My Daddy made
The food today
Mommy is supposed to make the food
The food didn’t taste yummy
The food tastes yummy always
Mommy and Daddy
Are starting to be
Kinda
Sorta
Just a little
Scary
At night
When I got up
To tell them
I had a nightmare
They were not asleep
Mommy was just
Sitting on the couch
Wide awake
Daddy was smiley again
Too Smiley
Daddy and Mommy
Are starting to be
Kinda
Sorta
Super Duper
Scary
I don’t think
That Mommy
And Daddy
Are the right ones anymore
I saw them pouring
Saltwater on my
Flowers
The ones I got from Mommy
I’m scared
This Mommy
And this Daddy
Are not my
Beautiful
Mommy
Kind
Daddy
Where did they go?
Where Did They Go?
WHERE DID THEY GO?
I want them back
