Tomeka Windom Poem
Silence answers before I ask
only silence answering my fear
something is near but never fully arrives
moving through spaces I cannot name
I don’t know what you are
but you know me too well
like hearing a name through a closed door I cannot open
your presence reaches me late
like a truth delayed in the body
you stand where certainty should be
yet I only catch fragments of you
half-formed, shifting without sound
never staying long enough to confirm
even your shape feels borrowed from distance
returning differently each time
I reach for what you are becoming
but meaning keeps slipping past me
and still you remain everywhere
without ever arriving fully

Tomeka Windom Poem
Are you in my head
a thought that doesn’t feel like mine
a memory whispering through me
asking me to see
what I am told is real
If you say I smiled today, it stays stored that way
only if you say so
If you say I sounded gentle
then that is what I was
only if you say so
If you say the moment was warm, it keeps its heat archived in my memory
only if you say so
If you say the light felt right
I stop arguing with the dark
as if it is a language my mind no longer knows how to translate
only if you say so
My thoughts blur at the edges of nightfall
Will you be my sight
I am learning not to see on my own
So whatever you say becomes what I believe
You are my eyes
and I am the version of me you send back to me
because I stopped trusting my own eyes
and now even desire feels like something I was told to want

Tomeka Windom Poem
Abiding hearts that grow with time
Gentle promises carried through the years
Every moment deepening what we share
Light found in another soul
Endless devotion quietly unfolding
Seasons changing but love remaining
Still strong beyond passing days
Lifetimes may come and go
Our bond continues to grow
Vows whispered from the heart
Eternally holding us together
Love is ageless
Love is pure
A gift shared between me and you.

Tomeka Windom Poem
O Lord, Thou Father,
I love You more than words can say.
I love You for the life and blessings
You have bestowed upon me each day.
Thank You for the trees and the skies,
for the beauty I see before my eyes.
Thank You, my Father, for the sun and the rain.
Thank You for hearing my cries when I am in pain.
O Lord, my Father, You are so true.
Yet some walk this world as if they have no clue—
as if they have no faith,
nor feel Your presence near.
But I thank You, Heavenly Father,
for I know that You are real.

Tomeka Windom Poem
Tell me what you see
and so it will be
I will believe
only if you say so
If you say I smiled today, I did
only if you say so
If you say I sounded gentle
then that is what I was
only if you say so
If you say the moment was warm, it stays warm
in my memory
only if you say so
If you say the light felt right
I stop questioning the dark
only if you say so
My thoughts blur at the edges of night
Will you be my sight?
Don’t mind me
I am learning not to see on my own
You are my eyes
So whatever you say
it becomes what I believe
because I stopped trusting my own eyes
to see what I truly desire

Tomeka Windom Poem
My life feels like pins and needles
pressed into every direction
each day adding another point of pain
I cannot ignore
in my early years, even the quiet hurts
like thorns under skin
I keep wondering how it could feel worse
why it keeps happening to me
days pass in and out of the same weight
fear following like a shadow I cannot name
I start pulling away from everyone
closing doors I don’t know how to reopen
and they begin to ask what changed
as if I could explain the breaking inside me
questions pile up where answers should be
confusion learning my name
and I am still here
trying to understand what my life is becoming

Tomeka Windom Poem
Let me ask you—
do you love me?
For I love you.
But that is not the question.
When things upset me
I cannot express it.
I sit back in anger
and then transgress.
The things you do,
you do repeatedly,
sometimes acting
as if I do not exist.
Leaving me behind,
my mind lost in a mist—
a mist of clouds
floating without direction.
The feeling of disinterest
is deeply noted,
the loneliness lingering
throughout the day.
Until it’s time for bed—
still nothing to say.
You have your friends,
and I have mine too,
but you and I both know
they should not come before you.
Yet I feel less important
when it comes to them,
leaving me confused
and frustrated again.
Everything you do
seems done on a whim.
You treat them like family,
but not the same with me.
Listen here, my guy—
I carry your last name.
Touch me, pinch me,
let me know I’m there.
Stop ignoring me,
tossing me aside
as if you do not care.

Tomeka Windom Poem
Sometimes I just want to get away,
break free from all this heartache—
and anger, I must say.
Be free to roam
without hurt in my heart,
break away from the aggravation
that’s tearing me apart.
I need someone to see my struggle,
to truly understand
why a good person
is always stepped on by an unseen hand.
By “man” I mean society,
by “person” I mean you.
Living in depression
leaves one disgruntled and blue.
Not knowing the next move,
not knowing the next step.
Be careful, my friend—
the pressure will build up yet.
All in your mind,
all in your heart,
broken promises and shattered trust
tear your world apart.
Broken hearts, broken promises—
need I say?
They leave you wandering
in confusion and dismay.
Break free from the chaos
that holds you back.
You have determination—
a strong will you do not lack.
Hold your head up high,
stand proud and strong.
When trouble arises,
you’ll be the first they call upon.

Tomeka Windom Poem
Calm… relax… pressure easing down
A new sensation I have found
I see now it was my subconscious thoughts
but I pushed through the anxiety and fought
I took back control of my body and mind
released the fear I had left behind
I overcame it, I broke the chain
stopped stress from running through my veins
Don’t become a victim to the subconscious mind
It can take over if you leave it behind
Its effects can feel so real in time
Like shadows pretending to be the mind
not truth, not healing, not what is real
Just thoughts that try to bend what you feel
So choose your peace and hold it tight
and you can win the inner fight

Tomeka Windom Poem
Say, angry child,
angry child with a frown,
balled-up fists
ready to pound.
Relax for a minute.
It’s okay to smile.
It’s okay to say no.
It’s okay to turn people away.
No hope for the future,
no hope for tomorrow,
searching for happiness
in yesterday’s sorrow.
Say, angry child,
hold your head up and smile.
Seems like you haven’t done that
in quite a while.
Say, angry child,
stay woke.
Believe in yourself.
Being alive, breathing,
should give you hope.
Say, angry child,
wipe those tears away.
Look forward to tomorrow.
Rejoice in your brighter day.
Say, angry child,
I see that smile.
Joy looks good on you—
you should wear it for a while.
