Say Angry Child

Say, angry child,
angry child with a frown,
balled-up fists
ready to pound.

Relax for a minute.
It’s okay to smile.
It’s okay to say no.
It’s okay to turn people away.

No hope for the future,
no hope for tomorrow,
searching for happiness
in yesterday’s sorrow.

Say, angry child,
hold your head up and smile.
Seems like you haven’t done that
in quite a while.

Say, angry child,
stay woke.
Believe in yourself.
Being alive, breathing,
should give you hope.

Say, angry child,
wipe those tears away.
Look forward to tomorrow.
Rejoice in your brighter day.

Say, angry child,
I see that smile.
Joy looks good on you—
you should wear it for a while.

Dear Tomeka, your expressive poem is tender, poignant, strong and beautiful. I was especially by your last stanza for an impactful finale. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan
