Ghosts

When the lights come on, memories evaporate. The walls of the room behave. Porous, primed, and paper white. Fear retreats where it learned to wait. And here I stand anew and unmarked. But, darkness does not forget. When the lights go out, the walls ooze and exhale. The dark consumes me once again. Old versions of myself return, merciless. Wounds not yet turned to scars resume their bleed. Guilt and regret dance like shadows. And I let them watch. They do not accuse. Extending their hands as if we once agreed to meet. They ask why I am startled. They have worn my face for years.

when the lights go out—
the ghosts I once left behind
breathe my name again

A Universe That Never Forgets

Death does not arrive with bias or mercy.
It sneaks between ribs and chokes beating hearts.
Eyes close and breath ceases — bodies go quiet.

We go, we go,
Gone.

Back to where the stars have patiently waited.
Where we scatter outward, and what we lose
Becomes light again
In a universe that never forgets.

Honey

Sweet in my tea
We don’t have much left, you see.

Our depletion
Makes way for deletion.

Sweet thing, we’ve cut all your flowers
To build our towers.

So now all I think
When I pucker my lips to drink,

Is
Humble me
Bumblebee.

Reflections

She is the drug that makes me so dark.
She makes me light the damning spark.

I’m in her cold mirror,
and she waves me nearer.

My body echoes her movement.
She is me, but with improvement.

We share brown eyes and a pale complexion.
She is me, but perfection.

She too has brown hair,
but carries a hunger in her air.

She shows me what the world sees —
a helpless girl weak at the knees.

She is not my reflection,
but a stark objection — Right?

Closer, she says. Come closer—

“Wouldn’t it be nice… to feel?”
“Close your eyes. Let’s make a deal.”

Listening, I pause — fixated and afflicted.
Slowly I nod. I am addicted.

With her electric gaze, entranced I become —
she possesses me so I slip and succumb.

My eyes go black, and my veins run cold.
Oblivion is the poison I’ve been sold.

Waves of euphoria, blurring and blushing —
the world around me faded and rushing.

Warmth and peace —
life is but a lease.

Off I go into sweet escape,
off I go under a tranquil cape.

Before long, my wave crashes.
My peace falling to nothing but ashes.

I open my eyes
and my high dies.

And she grins as she always does before fading into the glass.
And I can’t wait until we meet again.

So Spake Simple Simon

Simple Simon speaks softly.

“I name the clouds
and stick my boots in puddles
that give back to the sky.

On the dirt road to visit my father,
I pet the old dogs with floppy ears.
Like the ones Lucky had.

When the clouds clear,
light finds me,
and I pass it along.
Then I may play again.”

He smiles.
So Spake Simple Simon only in kindness.

My Bedroom Window

I was fourteen.

August smog pressed through the mesh of my bedroom window.
Through the grimy grid, I watched them in the backyard.
“Sign the papers.”
He was smoking a Belmont.
The smoke left his mouth
and hung between them.
He flicked the cigarette toward the house.
I watched the ember burn and die.

Darling

You are ridiculous and I am ruined.
Your laugh, that loud ungovernable thing —
I have built my whole house around it.
Now burn it down. Let’s build another.

Lavender Galaxy

No matter how I carve these lines,
you escape the page.
You slip through my metaphors,
slipping further from my hands.

Still, I write you.

In a higher orbit,
you sway and move.
A soul with too many sides,
with circling winds that carry you from me.

Still, I follow you.

But maybe,
I can peer into the eye of your storm.
I might catch a glimpse of your hurricane heart,
before it turns from me again.

Still, I call you.

You are beyond this world,
a lavender galaxy,
and I, a moon
in your gravity.

Housewife

The pot boils. I have made it boil.
You eat what I set before you
and call it love, or Tuesday.
I smile the smile I keep
in the knife drawer.

Illusion of Solidity

Flowing river, pooling puddles, sloppy drip.
Hold me warm
until I’m nothing but water.
Caress me, and I will give life to your earth.
Seeping blood into your veins
and rejuvenating your soul.

Then leave.

Because one day I will wake
without you beside me,
and the world will be so cold.
My rains will hail,
my lakes will freeze.
I will be ice
just to survive.
My winter will kill the life sowed.

I am only hard for so long,
until Spring springs,
as she does.
Her sweet charm
breaks me, soothing me back.

I will be a flowing river again.
