I Met a Soldier Once

I met a soldier once.
His eyes saw many storms.
Wars beyond a battlefield.
His body heavy hung.

He smiled he tried.
A little haste.
His teeth were gritted.
Hands on his waist.

And all the while.
He gently paced.
I knew he hid the battle haze.

He softly spoke in heavy tones.
But he never once relayed the woes.
Just fight the fight that he found.
In himself, not on the battleground.

He fought not just in the battlefields.
Not just with a gun.
A flag upon his shoulder.
And his jacket slightly slung.

He spoke of all the laughter.
Relayed all that he missed.
Said he “I do it all again”
And do so without haste.

And when he then became quite still.
I heard his silent screams.
And in that very moment.
I knew the battle raged.

He bore no wounds to see at all.
No scars or stitches did he own.
But when he walked along the way.
His heavy steps, deafening sounds.

He turned and smiled and said to me.
Now I’m homeward bound.
I hope we meet again someday.
And maybe share some words.

Then he turned and walked away.
His head was slightly hung.
And just for a minute.
I saw the weight come on.

Now he’s gone and no bugles played.
No medals dangled, 0r music played.
Just echoes of his war within.
Where too many soldiers.
Have found their end.

So, when next you meet a soldier.
View them more than brave or strong.
Theres battles fought behind their eyes.
That have raged a whole life long.

These Warriors Of Silence

They walked where thunder pierced the skies.
And dust and fire stung their eyes.
Single file orders clear.
With hearts of steel and comrade’s check.
They marched along the edge of death.

Not for glory, or for praise.
Only for those with absent names.
Their love of land and comrades’ trust.
Some rose, some bled, some turned to dust.

In foreign fields on bended knees.
Themselves the price by all agreed.
A price so high and misunderstood.
Kept locked away where darkness lurks.
Some came home shadows attached.
Some returned, beat in mistrust.
Some still lie beneath the stone.
But we know that they will never come home.

We owe them more than words can say.
Their sacrifice means we live free today.
So, raise the flag and bow your head.
Honour the living and mourn the dead.
Let freedom ring where they once stood
These warriors of silence for a greater good.

The Bitter Sweet of the Gear

Look at me what do you see.
A reflection in my eyes of your tormented lies.
Look deeper what do you see.
The reflection that you look at is you not me.
Listen can you hear that.
It’s the sound of my breaking soul twisted tormented and full of woe.
Listen closer that is the echoes of my demons that haunt me.
In the darkness of the night deliver me to Lucifer it cries it cries.

Look at me what do you see.
Secrets lies and torment and need.
Downed to the darkest hole, judge me not you do not know.
How I came to this place all alone.
Lost it all to a sweeter dose.
Now I live in dark torment.
With battles of heartbreak.
And torture and death.

Judge me not you do not see.
The bearing of my soul to thee.
Take me out and far away.
I cry to the demons that flow in my veins.
Deep in my veins the sweet juice hurts.
Engulfing my spirit my heart and my flame.
Help me god it’s too much pain.

Look at me what do you see.
A darkened demon that needs to be free.
Lay your hand upon my chest.
Does u feel that?.
It’s the tremors of my breaking heart.
Encapsulated by the demon juice.
Slowly dying dear god it hurts.

Listen can you hear me.
I wish it would let me go.
To a nicer kinder place I'd flow.
Gone from the darkness battles won.
No sweetness in my veins.
But calm logic thoughts.

Release me demons let me be.
Untwist my soul and set me free.
And next time you listen to the demons within.
Remember my story so easily begun.
For the reflection you see in this twisted soul.
Played happily and carefree in days of old.
Before the days the "gear" grabbed hold.

So listen to my last lament.
The torture.
The pain.
And all of the hurt.

The bitter sweet that runs through your veins.
Will twist you.
Will haunt you.
And make you insane.

A Veterans Creed

I walked a line while others slept.
A sacred vow sworn by depth.
Through many storms at home and away.
I served with loyalty.
Which remains to this day.

Not for glory, not for fame.
But for the flag and our country claim.
Each trip away, near or far.
Was for the flag on which I swore.

I honour those gone before.
The boots that touched this sacred floor.
And those beside me, front and back.
Courage the echo from the pack.

The uniform now packed away.
But the oath I took still here today.
I march with strength, and with grace.
A veteran’s heart pride and place.

I’ve bore the cost that service staked.
I fold the flag for others rest.
For comrades and their stories left.

Scars so deep and buried low.
They visit nightly just to show.
Hear me know as I say loud.
I will not ever bend.
I will not ever fall.
Duty is answered when she calls.

A veteran’s journey is never done.
And the comrades alongside.
Will march right on.
And when you see me old or grey.
Marching proud on a parade.

Judge me not for you don’t know.
The journeys pain or the loss that came.
A soldier I will always be.
Now guided by a Veteran’s Creed.

I Wonder Where He Went

He came back home, not the same.
Still had his smile.
Still knew my name.
Something deep behind his eyes.
Locked the doors and dimmed his light.

We used to laugh at silly things.
Rough-edged jokes and stories told.
Now every joke just passes by.
Echoes of a life denied.

He said, “It’s nothing, just tired I am”
I just need time and “I’ll be grand”
I'd text, I'd call, then let it be.
Not knowing if he’d answer me.

We'd sit in silence now and then.
Me looking for my oldest friend.
But war had drawn a quiet line.
Between his haunted world and mine.

One morning came, he wasn’t there.
His bed still made, and room just cleared.
No note, no sign, no last goodbye.
Just empty spaces and questions why.

And still I walk the roads we knew.
Still laugh sometimes, he’d laugh too.
But every joy feels slightly bent.
Because I wonder where he went.

The Soldiers Fight

Look, look it’s me it’s me.
A cry from far in time of need.
Sometimes I look but do not see.
What has made and become of me.

Look, Look I hear you scream.
Where are you gone from me?
I scream but look, look it’s me.
We all know it’s never me.

War has torn my life away.
In foreign lands I left my soul.
Many tears were cried by night.
I was always so alone.

Returned I did a lucky one.
But darker days have just begun.
But am I really a lucky one.
My head screams out.
My heart it hurts.

I hear me scream.
And try to square.
Things that I can never share.
A distrust in all that I hold dear.

My life is gone.
Changed for good.
No one or nothing,
can help me back.

Please be patient with me I ask.
I’m learning to be just me it’s a task.
The me I was before that time.
I spent away in turmoil.

A gentle soul.
A gentle heart.
Is gone forever.
With a heavy heart.

I travelled to that place of war.
It turned my world into the unknown.
The devil now cries out in my sleep.
Now you just belong to me.
You’ll never again be who you were for real.

I returned home all smiles and glee.
And no one saw that I lost me.
The anger built the sorrow hid.
The monsters cried out in my sleep.
And showed me things I can’t repeat.

I ask you please be patient.
I ask you please to understand.
I don’t want to be me right now.
I really want myself old self back.

The day will come when I return.
To the person you have known and seen.
Until then, please let me be.
I’ll weather the storm I’ll win the fight.
And I will be the person I long forgot.

Welcome to the Darkness

A darkened road I travel down.
With thoughts and dreams suppressed deep down.
The devils fire within my soul.
It just makes me tired and old.

I met you just the other day.
Hair of gold and skin so pale.
My mind it wandered older roads.
And I thought of times.
I held you close.

The devil came it took my soul.
Engulfed our lives.
Destroyed our goals.
The repercussions I must hold.
Are deep set within my soul.

I chose the devil over you.
I know it was the day of ruin.
Forgive me please.
I did not mean.
To break your world.
Or crush your soul.

And now I lay a broken man.
On the doorway of hells descent
Deeper falling every day.
Closer to the ground, I fear.

Please reach out a hand to me.
Help me God in you I trust.
Give me back what I have lost.
Extinguish all the pain and hurt.

Tell her God in your own way.
My love for her it never waned.
It was the devil oh so strong.
That led me by the hand of wrong.

Milestone Misses

The time has come to pack away.
And travel back to the life I hold.
Left behind to cope alone.
A wonderful wife and a one-year-old.
Excitement builds as I touch down.
To see her hair of darkened brown.
Through the gates I could not wait.
To see my baby and hold her safe.

Through the gates with happy glee.
And then I saw what I could not believe.
That little one so soft and cute.
Ran to the gate to daddy's love.
I realised what I had missed for she had grown and walked alone.
And i realised I wasn't home.
But square away I had to do.
And hide the guilt embracing you.

It hit me then like never before.
The milestone misses that are gone forever.
I'm sorry for not being home.
When you took those steps all alone.
Make it up to you I will.
And hide my guilt and never tell.
I'll never speak of the milestone misses.
That ache my heart because I missed them

A Friend of Mine

A friend of mine.
Has passed away.
In a lonely place.
With no one there.
Went to bed fell asleep
Never more to rise to eat.

She had a secret no one knew.
And laid in her bed body battered and bruised.
She laid there just sleeping.
And nobody knew.
That her life had just ended.
Without any rules.

The secret she had is,
what curdled her veins.
The dangers it brought,
and all of the pain.
Regardless of this it’s someone I knew.
A mother’s daughter.
And a daddy’s boo.

So, remember next time you pass judgement in haste.
It’s somebody’s daughter.
And somebody’s son.
A sister a brother a grandchild too.
An auntie an uncle.
Once full of love.

Regrets there are many who nobody sees.
If only she asked,
I knew I would be.
There for the anger and there for the hurt.
Help her to heal it.
And end the distrust.

But now that’s all over.
And never no more.
No laughter.
No singing.
No fear of unknown.

So, rest little darling your pain has all done.
And no one can hurt in the place you have gone.
I wish I could see you just one more time.
Remember your face with those big laughter lines.
