There's a window in my bathroom

There's a window in my bathroom.

I catch myself looking out of it
every day
every night
every hour

I see them all
parading around, full of joy
of hope
of meaning

I scan their faces for acknowledgement
hoping the light left in my eyes is still enough.

But they never peer upwards
instead they march forwards
their gazes transfixed on the day or night ahead

And I am left in the dark
waiting for new faces to reappear.

What you caused to die

Did my telegram never arrive?

Like the truth from your lips when you pushed it aside.

All those months in the darkness, you twisted the knife

Now claim clean hands, try to blind my eyes

I fell on the battlefield, then I bruised my mind

All the clues were left for you to find

But you never once looked at the damage you’d done,

To you it was over as soon as you begun

But I was scared to hear the door creak, scared to look you in the eye

Always waiting to hear your next crafted lie

So don’t try to reclaim us because I know the reason why

You’ve realised what you’ve lost and what you caused to die.

All those hours he won’t get back

All these hours he won’t get back
A clock on the wall, a heart with a crack
He watches the hours and how they pass by
Did you steal the stars from the midnight sky?

Long Hello’s but quicker goodbyes,
He carries them all, in his tears and his sighs
He runs from the light, he jumps at the noise
Of all his mistakes, dressed up as boys

He lives for the night, sleeps through the day
Because that’s how the pain all goes away.

He dies in his dreams, but no one knows
What those dreams are, or where they go.

When wearing white becomes a crime

I’ve missed out on pub table conversations
the shocked laughter and gasps
The feeling of validation that they seem to get
from confessing
and every time I feel ashamed and childish
you stare back at me.

Hurt.

How they hark at what they deem to be your innocence
Shake their heads in disbelief
As if wearing white was a modern day crime
past the age of eighteen.

I lay at night, silk sheets holding one body
being watched by you
< > you say
< >

But how I long to be held
Soft lips marking their territory on my neck
Patterns that look like battle scars
Souvenirs that confirm my maturity

But what’s to happen one December night
when your leash finally falls apart?
Me and another left alone in the purple palace
my childhood etched far away into the stars
What do I say when they ask to see my Kingdom?
All the possessions I haven’t taken

Will they take pity on my poverty? Lead the path away from home?

Or will they leave and you return
as before
reminding me that I am not deserving
at least not yet

I must remember the clock has no ultimatum
there’s no shame in not letting go
but that won’t stop me from feeling

eternally alone.

Putting it into words

Another drop of wine,
it’ll mask my recent crime
To find peace in the smoke
helps replace the things I’ve broke
To enter into his bed
paves an exit from my head

A mirror on the wall,
highlighting the tragedy of it all
The tightening grip,
running down to my hips
The water from my eyes
birthed from the darkest of skies

Whispers in the night that you never forget
like the sun at its rise and at its set
Feet on the ground but you’re not really here
and who’ll be there at the return to hold you, dear?

Conversations with people I never even knew
they give you their reasons, yet none ring true
Who's to say you’ve tried your best
if it’s only you with the keys to your secret treasure chest?

A lesson to be learned

I used to feel trapped inside of these walls
the locks used to glisten on all of the doors.
I dreamt of the night I’d get away
how I’d jump in the cab, no more to say.

The city was bright, quickly turned grey
I watched the light fade, day by day
I lived in the dark, slept through the shine
I denied that I’d seen all of the signs.

But soon after it came, the smoke then the flames
that no mind twisting could put out.
I jumped to the ground, it passed through the town and in my own tears I would drown.

While there was great concern over my return
I’d arrived with my feet on the ground.
The sun again shone, my friends hadn’t gone and best wishes paraded around.

Now I sit with my pen
again and again, thank god for the tears of those days.

They taught me a lesson, with no means of threaten and I’m no longer locked in a cage.

Rain still comes under new umbrellas, so don’t throw what you know away.

Friendship is True Love

I used to be convinced
that I had never experienced true love
i’d never made it that far across the bridge
spent 6574 days as just one body

But then I remember
the laughter, the splendid summer days, coffee fueled study dates
hugs warmer than the sun
that beat down on us even during the cruelest of winter’s outbursts

Tears that turned into smiles
fears that transformed us
made us who we are today

The clock never stops running
but our lives remain forever intertwined
on the outside it may seem that you are simply my friends

but if i’m honest

I owe the largest part of my heart to you.

Fiction

You demand forgiveness but forget the remorse
In your head you’re a victim, none of it was your fault
To you, your tears bear proof of your endless mistakes
Despite the revision of your cruel, dangerous ways

All you have is the past, even that is just fiction
You don’t put down the book
You don’t try to listen
To how you haunt my dreams
Or honour my nightmares

To how I still flinch at every shadow of you
How your lies break the skin, how the truth leaves a bruise
You’ll continue to claim denial as your home

And somehow forget how the fault is your own.

Mum

Is there anyone more admirable than a woman who stops moving forward
to see how far her children can go?
Who gives up her time, energy and sleep so that her children can have her share?
In the darkest hours, but also the brightest days,
she is always there for you,
ensuring that despite her busy schedule, there is no time at which her love ceases.

You’ve seen her world fall apart time after time seen her good nature be used and abused
but no matter the hardship,
she has always picked up the pieces.
One by one.

You’ve often felt yourself drowning
in a deep, dark ocean of worry.
Felt your lungs fill with intense despair and panic. But one thing that’ll never change,
is that no matter how deep this ocean,
she’ll always jump in it for you.

You hate when you hear her doubt herself: her beauty, her strength, her intelligence. All she asks you for is your happiness
when really, it’s the world,
the whole entire world, that she deserves.

As the years have gone on, you’ve become aware of your own strength. Your ability to carry on, despite whatever challenges life throws at you. You’ve noticed how you aren’t prepared to give up
not on yourself
not on those around you.
You don’t for one second wonder who these qualities have come from, because you know that

You are who you are because of her.

Bleeding colours

There’s a lot to be said for us in the red
when we cling to the white of our blues.
Do we know the taste of starting to waste?
The pain of a bruise, that we didn’t choose?
We take to the street, world at our feet and claim to be hurt and wounded.
It’s like we forget that before supposed threat, it was us leaving lands marooned.
Blood on our hands, we still hold their scars
from their own skies, we stole all the stars.
So why close the gate, decide it’s too late?
To stand at the shore, above any law.
A fraction of pain we could take away,
their endless night would bleed into day.
We’re so quick to place blame on the ones who’ve just came,
who’ve crossed oceans and worlds so bleak.
All it would take, a swim in their lake
and in their shoes, we’d see our own feet.
