Dear Mom

Dear Mom, I bet the day you held me to ya chest in Abeline, was the day you felt that you’d accomplished everything
But time is flying by
It’s see you later not goodbye hearts racing I promise I’ve been listening

20 years probably hit you like a ton of bricks
But there’s a construct that’s so funny, it’s such a twist
The big bad wolf is me now
Branched off the family tree house
Don’t cry it’s beautiful just loosen up your grip

Look, don’t know if you fully prepared
Like the table when I set it
Come sit down pull out your chair
Cause lately it’s been seeming we are not getting anywhere
From relationships to independence
Here are the words I’ll share

A baby boy in your eyes, but we see different reflections
You held the shattered shards when I was young and needed protection
Take a look at how your oldest just gorilla-glued the pieces
I’ll be safe on my own
I promise ma I really mean it

As I sit inside this room
A zone designed for comfort
I need a space that’s large enough
I am having mental growth spurts
And it turns out universities are my one-way flight to get there

So trynna hold your baby tight might only lead to despair
We laugh, joke, converse, and look back at how I grew up
Reminiscing on the times I started walking in those pull-ups
At the end of the day, you’re still the lady I can lean on
The woman I know raised me
and my hero with no theme song

Absorb this written letter into your heart soul and mind
cheering in the stands you’re the fuel that charged my shine
My final thought to leave you with will put your mind at ease
A man’s a boss on his own
But, a loving mother cultivates a King
Love, your son
