The Preacher

Mixed with crimson
and covered with wool.

They receive with hope
the spell of the gospel.
His voice calls with mercy
to devour innocent lambs
waiting jauntily to be sacrificed
on the altar of earth.

Come to me ye labourers
and I will grant you rest
in a place of no return.

One by one,
heads of blessings are counted
and preserved in knackery.
Blood speaks and births
miracles, money and maim-bers
with the seal and smell of death.

Beguiled and bewitched,
they cheer and applaud
to the subtle tongue of their father.

Awaiting the day of reckoning
with their shepherd,
doom calls out to death,
death beckons on the grave
to play and sing
along in high tunes.

Ekombi; Erik's Pride

Ekombi; a dance of my motherland.
A dance that soothes the soul.

Ekombi; Efik's pride
A dance of tranquility and beauty.

The attractive smiles on their faces
Like a sudden beam of sunlight, illuminates the earth.

The slow movement of their backs with ekara itong
Is like water lilies floating down a rill.

The rhythmic movement of their shoulders to ekomo iba
Is like the rise and fall of an ocean wave.

Their waist adorned with nkwa isin
Can make a hu-MAN drool for a fling.

Their bodies, as soft and tender as honey-dew
Transcends this realm, with Anansa's spell.

Ekombi; a dance of my motherland
A dance, that soothes the soul.

The Quest

I
a wanderer,
journey through three planes,
searching for where to call mine.
Lost in a belligerent and transient world, I
              D
                E
                  S
                    C
                      E
                        N
                          D
to an infernal region
where dead men tell no tales.
Words transmit like waves
and movement is as swift as light.
Silent as the foot of time in daylight
Lively and cheery at moonlight.

But!
In this soul, I cannot dwell,
for I have no right to mere men.
Weak and weary,
I struggle and triumph.
Like a flash, I
                    T
                  R
                A
              N
            S
          C
        E
      N
    D
and become one with sweet souls.
Charming and alluring
I am enticed by their smiles.

To whom do I belong?
Where do I fit in?

Until I find my home
The search continues in my afterlife.

Egwu

I heard footsteps approaching, and two knocks on my door.
I thought it was Oluchi, an angel recreated in human form.
I opened with curiosity to behold my priceless gem.
Stretching my hands to her waist, I felt the thick darkness in my palms.
“Who's there?”
A cool breeze greeted me, leaving the dazzling moon to gaze at me.
Is it my grandmother's mmuo?
My Chi whispered, “it is Ogbunabali”.
My heart danced to the beating of ogidi.
My thoughts flew faster than an air plane.
Maybe he saw when I came out of Oluchi’s hut.
No! When I hugged Chukwudi’s wife.
Ogbunabali, prince of the night, carrier of death.
Please spare my life; a kingsman, my wife and my farmland are all I have.
Then came another piercing knock, when I opened,
I saw a figure, like an Iroko tree,
his roundish head with a torch on it,
a goat skin bag and a gun hanged across his shoulder.
“Ebuka, are you not coming for a hunt tonight?”
Ah!! My thoughts and my game.
