The Giant Bass

I caught a giant bass today
Except I really didn't
So large it was it broke my line
You really should have seen it

But as far as telling stories goes
It's the best outcome of all
Escape'd bass are always large
And landed ones quite small

Humility

You have two great grandchildren
And a really great, great son
You’re probably wondering who that is
But I would be the one!

My humility is legendary
They’ll sing of it in song
They’ll write great poetry of me
I know that I’m not wrong

But wait a moment I better stop
You already think this true
This goes to show how smart you are
I got my brains from you.

Grilling

I tried to do some grilling
But the sky just opened up
And it rained like Noah’s time
Each raindrop filled a cup

I’m using here hyperbole
To make a point of rain
The grilling of the burgers
Could not even begin

So I used an indoor griddle
To heat the burgers through
It wasn’t quite that bad at all
I was trying something new

I think they were less healthy
Since they sat in their own grease
Where the grill would let it drizzle down
And all that’s left was meat!

Fish Stories

I caught a giant bass today
Except I really didn't
So large it was it broke my line
You really should have seen it

But as far as telling stories goes
It's the best outcome of all
Escape'd bass are always large
And landed ones quite small

Yet fishermen are not constrained,
By the evidence of fish,
When telling charming stories,
Of the fish that they did wish

Had landed in their boat or net,
This prize they now have taken
Our confidence in their truthfulness,
Would less easily be shaken

By unbounded ‘stravagance,
Of monsters from the deep,
And lines that snapped, and bobbers lost,
And fish they did not keep.

Yet tales they tell unceasingly,
The products of the outing,
More so than fish it sometimes seems,
These stories they keep spouting.

And larger do these fish thus grow
Upon each sacred telling
And eventually they’ll far outgrow
The wall space in their dwelling

Yet I digress from fish me thinks,
And the one that got away,
But yet I’ve proven mightily,
Their stories’ power to stay!

Dream Machine

I love the sound of the name Dream Machine,
It sounds like a Harley all painted and mean,

And ridden by bikers who are all dressed in leather,
Who ride around proudly in sunshiny weather.

But I doubt that a motor bike’s what you are getting,
To take one in bed would cause anguish and sweating,

And in truth it wouldn’t help with your sleeping at all
In fact the ambulance might get a call,

So I have to conclude that the name is misleading,
In fact the machine simply helps with your breathing

Very Early

I hear your muffled voice
It dawned into my being
The kick drum of your heart
It came before my seeing

We're going for a walk
I love the bouncy ride
I simply cannot stay awake
As hard as I might try

All motion now has stopped
Into action I must spring
I'll test these little legs of mine
We'll see who gets some sleep!

Don'T Mess With Dad

My son raced to the bathroom
And I could not get in
He’s far too quick and wily
For me to conquer him

But fathers have their methods too
So I went right downstairs
And turned off the hot water
Then stood outside his lair

And I let nature take its course
For I was bothered not
He reaped in full what he had sown
His shower cold, not hot

Cold showers tend to be quite quick
In any land or nation
Eternity an eyelid's blink
Compared to their duration

If I was so cold hearted
As to here be telling truth
I could not be called father
by any normal youth

Valentines Day

It's like D-Day, but with a V
And that is so much better
Than men landing at Normandy
In cold and rainy weather

To a hail of bullets swift and cruel
Their intent is to destroy
But cupid's arrows pierce the heart
To pour out fervent joy

The Fall

So easily are we lead astray
From truth that's been revealed
The Fall hath made us vulnerable
To follow that which kills

And not just follow but adore
So great our blindness is
As trinkets treat we 'ternal Truth
And in truth seek ignorance

And ignorance, our mighty shield
Deploy we through the day
And then we count it great success
To 'ave kept the Lord at bay

But worry not the Word's afoot
Alone He'll leave us never
If little drips awake us not
Then He'll unleash a river

And in the chaos that ensues
When we are gripped in fear
The Lord awaits to welcome us
And draw us ever near
