The Critic

A balancing act
Critique with no disrespect
Too easy to fall

The Wave

exploring the contours of a gentle wave
progressing slowly in the near darkness
its w(eigh)(ai)t almost too much to bear
alongside her now, reaching out
from crest to crest, the lines are traced
like a whisper of a breeze, silently caressed
relenting to its momentum, completely engaged
the wave shifts

she turns to him and examines his face
eyes locked, unblinking, a portal
seeing the unseeable, each drawing the other in
each moment a lifetime as two become one
sharing a singularity of feeling, not giving or taking
lifted to the highest places, weightless
simultaneously holding back and progressing
not wanting to end...as one becomes two

the wave forms again and lines are retraced
Goodnight
the dawn breaks

(our) Hallelujah

****Note: this is a personal version of lyrics I wrote for Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

Way up high etched in a rock,
young and in love they left their mark.
A simple equation with no answer, no resolution.
Witnessed again by another two,
Divided now, but the math still true
The addition of you a timeless hallelujah.

Your departure complete by a letter sent
My attempts to reconnect end up in shreds
Was it strength or fear that kept me from getting to you?
My thoughts echo in the places I hide,
the kind of man I could be, with you by my side.
For better or worse an unknown hallelujah.

Connecting in ways I can't comprehend
Wanting to say it in each message I send
Take me in your arms and tell me it will be all right soon.
Now and again our paths may cross
Elation must yield to yet one more loss.
The ebb and flow of an unspoken hallelujah.

Belong

If we belong then it won't matter,
the obstacles in the way.
If we belong then no plan is needed,
and nothing is left to say.

Sharing dreams of time together
is not the same as day to day.
The imperfections of life
undermine all in their sway.

If we belong, how do we know?
Reverberations of the soul may begin to slow.
And the sudden chill at the sight of you,
lost like acclimating to something new.

If we belong, must it cause pain?
Long after a flood recedes, destruction remains.
If we belong, would you call it fate?
First too early, and now too late...

but time no longer matters.
Regardless of duration,
if we belong...I will wait.

Just For the Day

Sunrise starts us on a new day
present tense is pushed away.
mind and body cleansed...
anticipation of the day is sensed

alive...just for the day.

The day lightens upon a meeting place
as the hands of time quicken their pace
Walking the human forged trail, you and I
the canopy of trees throw shadow to sky

shining...just for the day.

Thoughts long past arise, memories awake,
ever answerless about a path we did not take.
Return to today
...yet past thoughts stay
...answerless still
...resolution delayed.

happy...just for the day.

Stories are told, laughter is shared
silent moments between reflect the deepest of care.
Playful and fun, with an otherworldly feel
How many more moments like this can we steal.

complete...just for the day.

Sun dips down through the color streaked sky
already upon the time of goodbye.
As the light is fading, inevitably,
we delay our departure as long as can be.

Just for the day, I finally see.
Just for the day, just you and me.

Yesterday

As the light fades for me,
It still burns bright for you.
Missing you like yesterday,
Discarding what is true.

Defying the logical,
This mysterious emotion.
Flooded by the pressure,
In the depths of its ocean.

Misguided it seems,
To give value to dreams.

Pieces

All the things I have wanted to say
are running through my mind all day.
Insightful wit, touching words,
Ever hopeful they'll all soon be heard.

I dread the infinite space between
the points in time when you'll be seen.
Because messages sent can only buy
some solace from not seeing your eyes.

The same direction, but a different road,
so how much of me can really be shown.
As passers by we can only spare
tiny pieces of all we could share.

Not soon enough the time may be
when the roads will cross for you and me
But in the blink of an eye we'll be off again,
and I'll hold on to the pieces of all that was said.

All the while, I know nothing can be done
to stop the setting of this borrowed sun.
I'm the snow covered tree in the morning light,
absorbing your warmth until day yields to night.

So I'll give you my pieces, all I can spare.
To ask the same of you just doesn't seem fair.
On our way again to that infinite space,
sustenance received by your departing embrace.

Close

Come close enough to whisper,
so I can breathe you in.
To touch you without reaching out,
and feel your heart against my skin.

Come close enough to say the words,
only heard by me.
Close enough to whisper,
and I'll have all I need.
