What Is a Man?

Strong as a father,
Supporting as a husband,
Courageous as a soldier,
Obedient as a son,
Unwavering in faith,
What is a man?
Where does he stand?
What does he need?
Have we forgotten?
He is more than his body,
His success is more than just wealth,
His word is trustworthy and valuable,
His life a testament to the sacrifice of Christ,
His is a love that gives endlessly,
His is a love that leads through service,
What is a man?
A weapon of God to stand against the tides of evil,
What is a man?
A pillar of kindness and beacon of generosity to those in need,
Humble in action and clear in thought,
What is a man?
More than you think.

Food

A cornerstone of culture,
a tradition that connects all.
So common,
so widespread,
yet so unique in individuality.
A binding tie,
to all humanity.

Autumn's Feast

Autumns red dusk falls,
laborers leave their fields.
the day's last bell rings,
the hour comes 'round.
The cellar doors burst open,
the pantry doors unbolted,
the table is layed,
the gates of the hall swing wide.
The guests are met,
the feast is set.
Come join the feast,
join the banquet,
revel till the dark of night,
leave all your dread,
all your worries,
leave them outside the doors,
for tonight we live in a new world.

Calming

Nameless before the dawn.
Soundless before the dusk.
Oh how I wish to sing again,
one simple word,
one simple thing.
Oh how I wish to dream again,
then you are there,
and it goes away.
I can breathe again,
my thoughts begin to ease,
the endless rush of feelings slows,
you need not speak,
I need not see,
we both know.

Rushing Fate

Is this the end of all hope?
I feel the ruin of man draw near,
I must raise my sword,
my family lifts it with me,
my wife is there beside me,
my children watch in silence.
I must live through this day,
for their sakes and mine,
Fell deeds await.
My humanity slips away,
the soldiers fall around me,
I hear naught but silence,
an empty stillness surrounds.
Even as my sword swings I hear nothing,
even as I slay I hear nothing.
Then I feel it come,
the rushing wings of black fate,
the end that awaits us all,
The loss of one more man.
The river of death sweeping through the battlefields marks me as a target,
diverting it's course,
the banks are to steep,
I cannot climb out.
The riverbed swells,
the water surrounds.
My thoughts turn to all I left behind,
over the hills and far away a home awaits for me,
and will wait forevermore.

Time

The ceaseless march of all humanity,
the enforced advancement never-ending,
stretching far beyond human memory,
a straight line never bending,
an entity with impossible immortality.

One Bright Night

Resting my eyes,
I glance around.
A peaceful night,
a quiet night.
Outside all is slow,
a car passes here,
a bird flies across the moonlight sky there.
The full moon,
the bright moon.

One Night

One man.
Treading the streets of his city,
large black overcoat blending into the night,
pipe bowl softly glowing red against the dark,
cane sharply clacking aginst the cobbles.
Suddenly an owl sweeps by,
white wings flashing softly,
quietly hooting.
One man,
one street,
one bird,
one night.

Nothing

An empty idea
A blank wall of misty forms
Just thoughts on the wind

The Wait

A losing struggle,
why fight it,
what hope,
But lo,
there comes the dawn,
bringing the choice,
freeing the burden,
giving patience,
and determination,
to carry on.
Until the day,
when all shall be acheived,
and my heart can rest at last,
I can lay down,
finally with a smile,
and watch as the leaves,
drift down,
free from the tree.
