What Do You Know

What do you know about a nightmare coming true and a dream being just a dream?

What do you know about things looking one way, but they aren't always what they seem?

What do you know about all you've ever known as a father is a dead beat dad?

What do you know about let downs, being all you ever had?

What do you know about living in America, one of the richest countries, but you've always
been poor?

What do you know about, in order to feed your kids tonight, you have to steal something
from the store?

What do you know about being so stressed out, you feel like you are on the verge of a heart
attack?

What do you know about being biracial, so you don't know if you're white or black?

What do you know about crying out but no one listens and no one cares?

What do you know about living alone in the hood of Southeast DC with your kids and not
being scared?

What do you know about, even when you don't have you want to give?

What do you know about this hard life that I live?

Sweet Childhood Memories

I remember me and my cousins
running on the hot paved streets
Of Chicago
In mid summer
to the candy lady
to buy
a .25 cent frozen cup

Grandmama in the kitchen
wiping sweat off her forehead
as she prepares our favorite
Pork Chops, fried corn,
and collards
with white corn bread balls in them

Out front jumping double dutch
with the longest extention cords we could find
without getting into trouble
for unplugging something

Daddy in the bathroom mirror
again
spraying care free in his jeri curl
always trying to look his best

Block parties were so fun
with the fire hydrant shooting water
free prizes, games food
and fun
all on one block

Penny candy, porkrinds with hotsauce
pickles, pop, now n later's, icecream
Man we had it all

Sweet childhood memories
I will always recall

Case Dismissed

Engaged to a null void
My feelings destroyed
Stuck in a place
Everything's in slow pace
Features hardened in my face
No longer am I laced
Good times all erased
Hurt, anger, and rage in it's place
I pray for
God's saving grace

Life seems like a chase
So I'm in my personal space
and
it's lonely like a flower in a vase
Fire burns in my eyes like
they were sprayed with mace

But in the end
I'm winning this race
and that's the pleading to my case

Burn Sun Burn

Shallow waters resting
God's cool breathe creating a wind, that blows away my disgust
From the hurt that my heart stumbled upon
The day I met you

Blow Wind Blow

Blow away all the pain that i felt, beastly slaps and punches
Blow away all the foul names I was called
The sex I was forced to have instead of more beastly blows
Blow away the nauseous feeling I get whenever I think of how I could have ever loved
Someone like you

How sick of me allowing you to inflect such a negative energy in my life.
How ultimately terrible of me to love you with all of my heart through it all
What was wrong with me?
What a nightmare I lived through all of those years
While you sniffed away our lives and tried to take my soul away

I ached, cried, kicked, and screamed for you
I use to do anything to profess my love
I even went to jail, ruined myself
What a crying shame

Shallow waters resting, the sun beaming down

Burn Sun Burn

Burn away my demented thinking
Loving a heartless man
Selling myself short of the Queen that I am
The loving mother that I will always be
Burn away any doubt I have about what I can achieve
Burn away any piece of love that I ever had for this man

Now I lay in the shallow water an look up at the sun
As me and the earth finally become one

Visions

Visions of waves splashing in a beautiful blue sea

No one around, just us walking, you and me

The soft warm sand sliding between our feet

Our steps synchronized as if making a beat

Our hands join together because we are in love

You have on crisp linen as white as a dove

Your scent blowing in my nose, how I love that smell

You put your arms around me, look in my eyes and say, "I love you, Chele"

You make me melt like chocolate in one hundred degree weather

With you all weight is lifted, I'm as light as a feather

We continue walking down the beach, our voices sounding like a love song

We wish we could walk forever, because together is where we belong

But then reality hits me and a single tear drips down my cheek

As I remember the pain I felt at your funeral last week
