Acceptance

We want to be accepted
For who we are,
Not thrown away
Like rubbish.

We don’t want our skills
To go to waste,
We want to show people
What we can do.

Wherever we are,
Whatever we’re doing,
We want to be included,
Not sitting at the side.

What people don’t realise
Is that disabilities
Are not inabilities.

We are fed up with
People like them.
We want acceptance.

We are real people
With feelings too.

Becky

Becky, the Queen
Of the Riding School,
You will be missed
But not forgotten.

Becky, the best horse
I’ve ever ridden,
Always doing what you
Were asked right away.

Becky, a beautiful mare,
Loved your treats and cuddles.
You were never afraid of anything,
And always took care of your riders.

Becky, you will live on
In our hearts.

Rest in peace, Becky

People Who Help Us

There are many people who help us,
They help in many different ways,
They help people of all ages,
And people of all abilities.

Farmers grow food for us,
Carers help people who can’t manage on their own,
Doctors and nurses help us stay healthy,
Charities help people in different ways.

Dentists help us look after our teeth,
Police help us keep the world safe,
Teachers help children to learn things,
Firefighters help us put huge fires out.

Lollipop people help us cross the road,
Post workers help us send letters to people far away,
Lifeguards help beach visitors in trouble,
Transport drivers help us get from one place to another.

There are lots of other people who help us,
We can help each other.

Loch Ness Monster

Is the Loch Ness Monster real?
Has anyone ever seen her?
I have never seen her,
Except on ‘The Simpsons’.

My family and I went on a boat trip on Loch Ness,
We never saw the Loch Ness Monster.
Many people have looked for her,
With binoculars and cameras.

When Mr Burns, Homer Simpson, Professor Frink and Groundskeeper Willie
Look for the Loch Ness Monster on ‘The Simpsons’,
They drain the loch until it is completely empty.
They capture her and take her to Springfield where they live.

Some people look for the Loch Ness Monster from the road,
Others look for her from a boat.
There are lots of possible sightings,
No one can be sure if they saw her or not.

They capture what they think is the Loch Ness Monster with a camera,
They don’t drain the loch like ‘The Simpsons’ characters do.
Draining the loch is not recommended,
‘The Simpsons’ characters do all sorts of silly things.

If you ever go looking for the Loch Ness Monster,
Take binoculars and a camera.
Don’t be silly like ‘The Simpsons’ characters,
Don’t drain the loch until it is completely empty,
Don’t capture her the way ‘The Simpsons’ characters did.

All About Me

Born in Glasgow on 15th January 1994,
Lived in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire my entire life.
Started Primary School aged four,
Diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder aged seven or eight.

Started High School aged eleven,
School merger aged twelve.
New school building aged fifteen,
Started College aged seventeen.

In my spare time I like to ride horses,
I have been doing this for ten years.
I attended a children’s dance school for eighteen years,
And started adults’ ballet six months ago.

I also enjoy researching my family history,
And volunteer in a coffee shop while between jobs.
I am also a Girls’ Brigade Leader,
And enjoy doing jigsaws.

I have one older brother who doesn’t act his age,
Eight cousins, one is a trained actor.
I have one cat, a sixteen year old called Bonnie,
Had other pets in the past.

I am a Disney fan, my favourite princess is Belle,
And love to bake, mostly cupcakes.
I love seafood, especially calamari.

Although I have an Auditory Processing Disorder,
I can do most things.
Some people don’t believe that, they don’t see the real me.

My Dressage Experience

Learning dressage can be difficult,
Especially when training with different horses.
Eddie ‘Whoopee Cushion’ maintains speed all the way through,
While Angus ‘Cow Horse’ moos.
Scooby ‘Snail’ fails to obey,
And Joey ‘Giant’ delays going into canter.
Although all horses are different,
I still manage to score over sixty per cent.
Even if horses don’t obey,
I got to keep trying to keep my score high.
If I don’t keep trying and let the horse take control,
I will lose marks and have no hope of winning.
When I halt the horse and salute,
I know it is the end of the test and hope for a good score.

Most Beautiful Christmas Poem

Christmas, a happy time of year,
A time to be with family,
To give each other presents.

The house decorated
In every room,
With a tree, tinsel,
And ornaments.

A turkey for dinner,
And Christmas Pudding,
And crackers to pull.

Christmas jumpers,
T-shirts and Santa hats.
Parties and nights out
With friends and family.

Christmas, a happy time of year.

Disability

Life with a disability is hard,
This I know, but lots of people
Are still unaware of
Non visible disabilities.

These people treat us unfairly,
Creating problems and pinning
The blame on us for their actions,
Leading them to trouble.

The reason for their behaviour
Unknown, maybe unaware of
The law, maybe the way they
Were raised, maybe just no sense.

Perhaps they don’t like
Seeing us succeed in anything.
Or do they need training?
This I would like to know.

Lack of support from them
Is lack of effort from us,
Especially in work where
Support is important.

Please support us,
Wherever we are.
Without support,
There is no hope for anyone,
Including the non supporters.

Grandma

Grandma, we miss you
You were loved by all the family
Each and every day

We had lots of fun together
Never to be forgotten
Grandma, we miss you

You loved cappuccinos
And heated dinner plates
Grandma, we miss you

All the family together at New Year
Going to panto each year
Grandma, we miss you

Coming to see me in a dancing show
Or a Girls’ Brigade Display
Grandma, we miss you

So many things we did together
And I want you to know
You are still loved to this day

Good Customer Service

As a volunteer in a coffee shop as a waitress,
I provide customer service all the time.
Sometimes I make mistakes,
Other times I provide good customer service.

One day a customer came in for lunch,
She ordered a toastie and chose the middle line of fillings.
She didn’t realise the three lines of filling options were different things,
I pointed out the first filling on that line goes with the last filling on the first line.

She reread the menu and chose cheese & pickle,
The toastie was cooked and delivered quickly.
When she paid her bill, she said to me,
‘Thank you for your help’.

She told the manager about how helpful I was,
When she got confused about the fillings.
The manager was pleased to hear about this,
She said how pleased she was.
This is something to remember.
