The Effects of Mental Health

The trousers that once barely fit now were baggy
and hung from her waist
she hides her wrists with the sleeves of her hoodie
hoping no one saw as she tried to reach the book
on the high shelves of the library.

She looked at the mirror that hung on her wall,
seeing a completely different person than what we saw.
Her body was big and her face was even bigger than the rest
but what we saw was just a fragile girl,
She’d shake her head when her mum
asked if she was hungry, hoping she would believe her

The girls at school laughed,
calling her an attention seeker and a freak
and the boys were no different,
tripping her up in the halls and calling her a slut.
She’d cling onto the toilet seat
as she puked up the food
that once filled her with happiness

She was alone but would always tell her mum
that she was going to hang out with ‘her friends’
but all she did was walk alone in the forest,
wiping the tears from her eyes.
She’d put a hand through her hair
and her stomach would drop
as a chunk of hair would drop to the floor.

She usually sat in the shower,
crying her eyes out and clinging to blade
as the clear water turned to red,
She closed her eyes wishing life
was easier just once that the hunger would stop
and her arms would stop bleeding
