Bleak November

Beneath the bleak November sky--
Standing, my back to the setting sun.
Chill wind slamming against me,
Tears flowing down my upturned face.
Staring into the oncoming darkness,
Overwhelmed by pain and fear.
Alone, facing the encroaching night.
The shadows are drawing nearer.
They have almost eclipsed me.
But suddenly I hear your voice,
Feel your hand clasping mine,
Arms surrounding me in a gentle embrace.
Your warm breath as you lips brush my neck.
And suddenly, the moon breaks the horizon
Bathing the night in silver light.
Stars grace the blackness of the sky
As you hold me close.
I no longer fear the dark.
But then I wake--
Oh, I wish that dream was true!

Altered Dynamic

Silence fills the gap.
Within arms' reach,
But the distance feels like miles.
The room feels slightly chill,
Though you used to bring it warmth.
You didn't hurt me,
But your action switched the dynamic.
I don't know what you are,
Or if I even want to know.
Things were altered
Feelings changed--No, disappeared.
Remedy looks out of reach,
I've turned my back.

Tainted

I’m just a shell of what I used to be.
Now you say I’m beautiful and innocent,
Cheerful and sweet.
I may be those things now
But blinding beauty, whitest innocence
True cheerfulness and sweetness like pure sugar…
Those are what I used to be.
Before reality laid its icy grasp on my shoulder
Shattered my rose-colored glasses
And replaced them with a jaded view.
Before cynicism was my companion
And darkness entered my world.
Innocent childish trust replaced by wariness and suspicion.
Beauty torn down by rejection and
Replaced by self-consciousness.
Altruistic sweetness tinged by desire.
And lighthearted cheer shrouded in caution,
Overshadowed and stifled by disappointment.
And yet they still call me beautiful and innocent,
Cheerful and sweet.
If you like me as I am now
Scarred and broken by the world’s ways
How much you would’ve loved me
Before I was tainted.

Demolition

Tall stone towers and the fortress walls
Crumbling to pieces, shattering like glass.
Destruction reigns over what was built--
Over what was built to be broken.
My shield has fallen,
The rubble raining down upon my head.
Smoke and debris clouding out my vision.
Save me from this living nightmare!
Only your touch can change this brokenness
And turn the dreadful to a dream.

The Shield

Blackness fills your view.
The brutal claws ripping,
Cleaving the flesh of your heart.
Relentless pain choking out your breath,
Suffocating you with misery and gloom.
Take my hand, I’ll never leave you!
I’ll fight the anguish that consumes you,
Though it cost me dearly.
I’ll share your pain,
The river of empathy
Raging strong in my veins.
If only I could remove your pain--
I would relinquish myself to save you.
But, utterly helpless, I cannot stop the torture.
Instead I’ll hold you in my arms,
Shielding your beaten heart as best I can.
Softening the harsh blows,
Taking the lash upon my own back--
Even if it leaves me raw and bleeding.
Feed off my strength,
Hide in my embrace.
The night can’t last forever,
I’ll bring you through.
Even when the shadows are the blackest
And the cold creeps toward your core,
Don’t let your heart grow numb.
My warmth can save us both.
Never lose faith, the dawn will break.
The sun’s brightness will touch you again.

Fire and Ice

Two tortured hearts
One burning in its own blood,
One frozen and fighting to feel.
Screaming into the empty void,
Calling to each other
Across the endless, lonely miles.
The fire and the ice.
Will they ever reach each other,
And re-create two hearts of flesh?

The Undesirable

A smile hides the truth,
Shrouding the feelings of others.
But the dark cover is transparent:
The truth still surrounds the undesirable,
Shoving, wounding, crushing.
Only wanted when it’s convenient.
Never good enough their own merit,
Except when their few talents are desired.
Screaming into the void, like the lone wolf’s cry,
But deaf ears are turned to the desperation.
Will the undesirable ever be healed?

Flames

Some flames can never be extinguished.
The sparks you saw behind my eyes,
They leapt up from my heart,
From a consuming inferno burning forever.
But once the fire sears the nerves the pain will cease.
Would that I could catch any sparks that fly your way,
Let them smolder in my heart, saving you the pain.
The fire has burned me and smote my nerves,
Pain has left, though the flames still roar.
I can no longer feel.

Darkness

Charging into the void,
Eyes flashing, blades slashing.
The shadows reaching out
Their icy tentacles cutting to my core.
Screaming into the night,
I’ll never quit this fight.
I’ll never let the darkness take you.

Thoughts

Haze trapped in a glass bottle
Swirling like a raging ocean,
But freezing into ice in open air.

Darkness and light marbled,
Turning to so many shades of gray,
But never losing sight of what they were.

Pain stabbing and pleasure caressing,
Mixing, blending to bitter sweetness.
But always together, never separate.

Thoughts racing through my mind,
Freezing, swirling, mixing, turning,
But forever keeping focus on the truth.
