A Dying Winter

The rain stopped,
Heavy bank of clouds remained,
Afternoon was dark until dusk,
No light to draw back the day,
A strong frost shock,
Gripping the land,

Unrelenting,
The trees fell silent,
Along the gullies and wet ditches,
A faint mist was rising,
Winter's last stand against spring,
The temperature descended,

The wood tightened against the cork,
As if the wasted wood might snap of the ground,
A fine crack froze over the dew pond,
The circle of the ice was finally closed.

One For All, All For One

One for all, All for one by Kamisah bt Abdul Karim

One for all, all for one,
Our teacher crooned, on a torrid noon,
Her sneaky smile stirred a shake, as our senses began to quake,
We did the math, we sum and times, subtract and divide,
Found no glimpse of light, well, who were we to brag, we’re no genius of math,
Groped our way into the light, greeted by an adventure in delight,

Adventure was kind and wise,
Fluttered few words of advice,
I shall rattle the sleeping ogre to quake in you,
But,
It will bloom radiant flowers of wisdom in you,
The path to thrive would be rough, to remain tough,

Teacher declared a new merit to meet,
Made our hearts skipped a horrifying beat,
Teacher pierced it fiercely loud and clear,
“Each one of you must pass my test,
OR ELSE,
each one of you will get an ‘F’”
That’s outrages! Is she serious?

We begged for reconsideration,
Her decision, as sound as a pound, stood its ground,
Driving us stark raving mad,
Failed every test, foiled every bash,
We began to stumble and fumble,

White towels in grip, we shrieked in defeat, “Abort ship!”,
Our parents not ready to quit to halt a sinking ship,
Told us to lend a hand, to share and mend,
New doors were unlocked, blinded to appearance, status and race,

Finally,
We aced the test, a gigantic burst of pride pulsated in our chests,
Tears trickled down teacher’s face as she quavered that phrase,
We sobbed silently in apprehension,

We acclaimed,
One teacher’s passion,
Every parent’s preservation,
Every friend’s participation,
One for all, All for one,
No one gets left behind, moving together hand in hand,
As friends, as families, as communities,
One nation in unity,

Emptiness

A new adventure is what I need,
From this mundane little life I lead,
But dead end paths to what I seek,
Make quest seemed bleak and weak,

Tireless screams that can't be heard,
Hammered in my head, until it hurts,
Dark roads ahead, empty as a desert,
Clawing cluelessly into sands of dirt,

A helping hand is what I need,
But I have none guiding my trip,
I wish for a purpose to sow my deed,
That special fuel to sail off my ship,

May be it was me who didn't see,
What I should cherish in times of glee,
Belittling glories that seemed puny,
Punished now with nothing to carry,

Lesson learnt, wisdom earned,
A chance at life is what I yearn,
I'll give it meaning, not let it burn,
A grateful song I promise to churn.

Defeated

Is there a real purpose in living?
Everybody says,
life is a gift,
life is worth the struggle,
Life is the reason for being,
Life is a journey to liberty,

But is there really light at the end?
Everybody says,
Don't lose to negativity,
Don't lay idle in defeat,
Don't fuel failure with gasoline,
Don't say that you can't get up,

But what if you only see darkness?
Every path ends with a door shut,
Every try is never good enough,
Every picture seems dreary,
Every breathe feels weary,

What then?
Is there a point to stride on?
Galloping in a field of uncertainty,
Pushing through thorny weed,
To pen this novel of long gone,

Tears warm on my cheeks,
Drawing me a fake smile,
Looking into a mirror of cracks,
I see a face scribbled with defeat.

Lost

In my pursuit to find me,
Like a baby, I crawl on all four,
Wandering tirelessly out of avid curiosity,
Lost in this jungle of thoughts,
Who am I?
What am I?
A writer or a painter?
A fighter or a peace maker?
What should I do?
What should I not do,

I wish to grasp my deepest desire,
Tightly in my clammy palms,
I wish to execute my purpose with vigor,
I wish to paint the best picture of me,
The fact is,
My balance is looking crookedly odd,
The fulcrum not well placed,
The weights not well measured.

I breathe in my odds calmly,
An inhale, another inhale, the next,
I do not wish to suffocate in this jungle,
Give in to the lurking wild beasts,
I must find my way out,
Before I begin to blend into the green.

Love In Sync

Two souls mixed in tunes,
Rippling chords in harmony,
Strumming the same song.

Rhythmic love notes,
Vibrating flames of passion,
In synced hearts of pair,

We sing vows of love,
Pitching notes of high and low,
Not to bounce off key.

I Miss You

I miss you,
Missed the chats that we used to have,
Missed your jokes that made me laughed,
Missed my jokes that gave you the cramps,
Missed the scoldings for our chats too long,
Missed the talks about all our worries,
Missed you being annoyed with me,
Missed being told what a tube bulb I was,
Missed your tireless effort in making me see,

You were never in the flesh,
But you impacted my life,
You were close to my heart,
But you left without saying bye,

I miss you so much,
I will always treasure us,
I will miss that once upon a time,
When you and I were one.

A Wife's Cry

Perfection?
Surely I am not built as one,
In all my scurry to do my duties,
I will miss out on one or two,
Always reminded,
Always pointed out,
Demotivating, deafening,
At times, mind bombing,

You didn't make me my milk,
You didn't tell me to,
You should have asked me,
Really? You couldn't just tell me,
And now you sulk before you sleep?
I feel defeated, tired, exhausted,
Why didn't I remember to ask?
Why didn't you just tell me?

I wash your clothes,
So you'll have a clean pair to wear to work,
I clear the lump of hair from the manhole,
and wash the toilet,
So you'll feel comfortable while showering,
I change the bedsheet, the pillow case, make the bed,
So you'll have sweet dreams in your sleep,
I cook the food according to your liking,
So you will enjoy your every meal,
I behave as how you admire a woman to be,
So you'll be proud to have me,
So many little things that I do,
just so to please you,

Why do you fuss about the one thing,
that manage to slip of my mind?
But not a word for an array of wonderful things,
I do out of love for you,
A wife was what I took an oath for you,
I am just flesh and blood,
with freckles of flaws,
I can never be flawless in my deeds,
But news flash my dear,
So can't you,

Romance of Cold

There are thirteen steps
between you and I
each one creeks
in my blood
engraves my mind

you stagger and climb
the small stairway
toward a bed
that grew so cold

sheet swelling in sweat
from wrestles of words
letters drown in river abuse
egos of fatigue old souls

satin blanket of lavish
gave comfort of none
chatters in restless slumber
ticker forcing faint beats

I crawl out of this wretched bed,
thirteen steps between you and I
every step squinting more blood
my limestone plateaux eastwards

Moh Moh

Ma! Ma! Moh! Moh!
He points up into the sky,
Looking up, I see his awe,
An enchanting ball of light.

Ma! Moh! Moh!
He jumps in pure bliss,
I carry him up, cuddle him tight,
Pointing to the bright ball of light.

Ma! Moh! Moh!
Yes baby, it's the moon,
Moon baby, moon,
Ma! Moh! Moh!

Yes baby, moh..moh..moon,
He smiles an unsoiled joy,
A dear moment that we share,
A young beautiful soul that I have,

We lock in the august wonder,
A luminous ball in the night sky,
I'm grateful for this hug of trust,
A grandma and her darling grandchild.
