Autumn

Beneath naked trees
Awaiting winter dreams.
Autumnal litter

Winter

Crushed beneath my shoe.
Frozen raindrops shattering
Winter snow

The Unwary Foot

Blue streaks on water
Draw me to the hidden shore
Brittle ice cracking.

The Songstress

Bird on barbed wire fence
Sings to his hearts delight
Shot in mid sentence.

To My Beloved

Today she came and
waked me with a kiss and
Outstretched lay uncovered
                     at my side.
My cold heart
                     leapt as
Yesterday’s fears were
                     Washed away.
Beloved laid her healing hands
                     like downy feathers on my soul;
Each stroke a sweet caress
                     silken in the afterglow.
Love has stepped into my
                     wasteful life and
Opened mine eyes;
                     with truthfulness has she
Vowed to keep herself for
                     mine.
Each day brings delight
as I’ve never felt before and
Death, death would not be welcome
were it to claim me now.

Covid Blues

They haven’t come for many weeks
the men who mow my grass
at level 4 in lock-down too
they haven’t had the chance
to venture out,
the price too high,
their bubble they can’t break
but honestly paspalum gunk
is hard for me to take.

They haven’t come for many weeks
my pup won’t rest her butt
on grass that touches up her tush
for her it’s way too much.
She whirls and twirls
then whirls some more
most gingerly she squats
but moments later yaps and yelps
‘sif bitten on the bot.

They haven’t come for many weeks
and with each passing day
my yard a meadow has become
soon I’ll be baling hay
then when they come
the men who mow
I’ll tell them it’s okay,
my lawn became a meadow but,
I’m leaving it that way.

Silver Star

When I was young and wore a brighter crown
my costumes sheathed me like a queen.

Fleet Street followed where I walked,
sage critics copied when I talked,
scripting fancy phrases for my lips.

When I was young, before my shadow greyed,
my daily exploits wowed the crowds,
and every Fairy Princess wore my face.

Moguls scattered diamonds at my door,
and when I played packed houses every night
the people roared, encore! encore!

The day my candle flickered
Fleet Street crowed at my demise,
beneath their scorn my light diminished,
but I clung to what was mine.

When I was young, I dared to touch the stars.
How can I douse the flame she’s fanning
when beneath my fear is pride.

She treads the boards my golden daughter;
she plays packed houses every night
and wows the crowd who whoop and holler,
for the one and only, Silver Star
