Soaring above the bushfire's flames,
astounded crows, blacker than charred
tree trunks, flap spectral wings.

Numb with loss, no caws drone out.
Wind rushes in updrafts from
the smoky heat: to rise as a vengeful spirit,
to hammer at fleeing pinions,
to witness aimless circles above coal black trees,
now absent of rough stick nests.

the dark does not assault them
they succumb upon a dusky breath.

How unlike is the glaring light?
How it enslaves and pinions
each stem with a fiery eye.

Love mesmerized
yearns for the dark coverlets,
the secrecy of eventides.

Those brief nocturnal shallows
can hide a sorrow,
make you smile like the last rays

caged behind the eyes  

the weight of light 
the hum of death

the break of seabirds
the molted sea

now awash in soil    
under mezzanines of color

brine slagged in strips of rage 
trailing beneath pinions of night 

burn in the silence
perfect and full of black 

suicide silhouettes 
heaving deep the godlung 

that pulls you 
and me
into 
violent 
synchronicity
