Alligators
Alligators stalk
Water moccasins stay clear
Frogs suddenly still
Old cypress trees water bound
Creaking in the bayou swamp...

In
a
dream
all
i
see
barely
audible
stealth
are
my
moccasins
running
through
the
autumn
woods

Graves of Our Fathers
The Black Hills are crying,
our Mother forsaken

Enemy boot prints
where moccasins claim

To live just to die
in noble futility

All drums beat in silence
—He Sapa in shame

(Pine Ridge South Dakota: July, 2019)...

Beware the Bayou
black-water canals
where alligators patrol
and moccasins wait

where starved mosquitoes
invade in hoards at twilight
thirsty for fresh blood

at morning's first light
dawn illuminates cypress
birds announce sunrise

perilous beauty
on display in the Wetlands
and all is at peace...

Autumn Song
The sunset
is delicately chipped
            in cherry wood.

Summer sings in your memory
that sits now, silent,
under a puzzle of trees,
sunlight salmoning hair
streaming into hands.

It is over.

A summer sonata
is in the wind. Winter
comes silently
            on sorrel moccasins....

To Shoot a Friend
Self righteous piety reeks like a blanket of wet dog hair,
odoriferous and foul.
Betrayal.
My friend.
Sagging spirit like a pillowcase of drowned kittens.
For what profit to you?
At what cost to me?

We walk this same earth.
Pray your moccasins do not cross the balance point of the universe....

Nature Is Tinkering
Nature is tinkering
And timber
Leaning on the rope
To the law of gravity
While breaking branches
Sharpen the storylines
I am using this saw
To divide infinite numbers
So that my suede shoes
Are merely muddy moccasins
So, the sticks are stacked
And she’s dragging her own limbs
To the heaving heap...

Whispers
Leaning low to softly whisper
wisdom only listening hearts can hear,
leaves lisp lifelong lessons
stored in rings of years.
Centuries of observation -
surging mortals on the move
from the silent moccasins of ancients
to the raucous modern milieu -
captured and absorbed,
in distilled elixir cleansed in nature’s veins,
exhaled by forest giants,
their sage revelations
of human gain and loss.

Toast
After a brief illness,
some dry toast.

This is how we create the world;
with electrochemical reactions.
Some enzymes melt monsters,
some chew moccasins
to make a morning supple enough
to make it to evening,
One thought must be
hammered to another
until a scaffold is erected
into mind-bones.

After the toast, a part of me
goes for a walk,
another part stays home
repairing a straw life, in case
the big bad wolf returns....

Blue Harvest Moon
Comes silently
on sorrel moccasins

roosted on tortoiseshell
of root cellar

singing, stumbling
in numb imaginings

lit with half-light
vegetables
squeezed in jars
of russet and avocado

above
a cornice of sky
split with laughter
searching
for broken arrowheads
gold and silver among leaves

air billowed white
from lips
soft frail bones
of snowflakes
magically appear
scattering in breath
taken away
into apple night...

Hush
The dainty foot marks like daisy treads,
Loiters in her intoxication,
Places puddles in the perfume trail,
Coo's in enlightenment to my whistle.

Touch me not for she crushes my heart,
With her soft feet in black moccasins,
Chatter as she whispers on the walk,
In desire loves me to follow.

Lewd perfection I hoot in pursuit,
Swaying form winks as she turns to smiles,
Bottom lines skit in free offer,
Prejudiced I track the sensation....

Toast
After a brief illness,
some dry toast.

This is how we create the world;
with electrochemical reparations,
enzymes to melt monsters.
We chew moccasins supple enough
to travel on to evening,

One thought must be
hammered to another
until a scaffold is erected,
a bone ribbed archway
for onward journeys.

After the toast, a part of me
goes for a walk,
another part stays home
repairing a straw life, in case
the big bad wolf returns....

Below indigenous herds of species’
Soft stampeded tramplings,
Profound caves water rivers underground.

Roots grow their nether forests
Down to a shadow fathom depth of earth.
Tendrils leaf out only tuber leaves of dirt.

Flooded backs of charcoal catacombs
Snake like water moccasins through
Aquifers to rise disguised as springs and wells.

Here there is a bargeman who
For pennies holding eyelids down
Will help you to forget

Vaguely chambered
Urges of the heart....

Heaven's Sacred Arrow
how sacred are the raindrops
passage to another world

if I were a raindrop
luminous crystals
window wash the acid sky
and hot sultry earth
spic and span

Drumming down
a fresh start
blessed beginning
for all moccasins to tread
the path of the heart

Sacrificial waters
life giving monsoons
suckle newborn sprouts
feed snow capped
mountain rivers, raging bull
oceans
and the tiny sea inside
a mother’s womb

If I were a raindrop
a merciful tear falling from
God’s eye...
