Somber Annuals
eyes of sunken hollow
pupil
skin stretched thin as tallow
stooping for a coin
so shallow
and falling
for that pretty shimmer
hammered with a faierie's splinter
pupil eyeing in the snow
so shallow the sallow
heart of him
with legs unsteady
and brain too heady
he let the pretty shimmer go
and wept to bleed
bright red white snow...

Premium Member Petunia Leads the Way
My eye is quickly seized by a gorgeous glimmer of purple; I walk over to take a better look. The renegade petunias have arrived to announce the imminent arrival of summer. They are supposed to be annuals, but no one has told them, so here they are, magically showing summer the way.

purple petunia
vibrant and beautiful
spring into summer...

Premium Member Perennials In Their Seasons
Winter perennials lavished with hope
under layers of crisp snow
waiting their turn

Spring perennials hope to be noticed
duller than annuals
but more dependable and loyal

Summer perennials outlasting the annuals
proudly soaking up morning dew
last men standing

Fall perennials going away gently
giving their seeds gladly
easy like trees...

POETS

Seems we be a restless,
often rootless, band
we poets.
Annuals
bursting forth
in fullness
only to fade,
blown away
on fickle winds.
Stringless kites
anchored
in the ethereal.
Voices adrift
on the mind’s
muse.
Tumbleweeds
in torment
pursued
by the winds
of our future.

Winter's Passing
After winter’s cold dark days

Nature wakes up in different ways,

Colours start to return for all to see

It’s now warm enough to impregnate seeds,

For the annuals to begin their growth

Tubers and roots start to enact their life,

Under the heat of the sun’s invigorating light

Slowly but surely spring then summer comes into sight,

Fostering dreams and hopes so that our future is bright....

Tardy Tulips Tantalize
Tardy tulips delight,
First spotted in early May morning light.
Grape hyacinth clusters muster too,
The energy to push up through.

Warming sun with still cool soil,
Begins the season I’ll happily toil.
Seeds to sow,
Annuals and veggies to grow.

Iris still but bundles of sheaves,
Reticent roses sprout tiny leaves.
Sassy daffodils declare - we were here before
And now open still more.

Harvest
Yes autumn! With a carpet of old leaves,
dying annuals sun burnt look old.
Mist welcoming with morning gloom;
ripened fruit now hanging bold.

Oh autumn! Let me reap your bounty,
before your fruit begins to drop.
May I find pleasure in your glut
when collecting up your ripened crop.

Chutney! Relish! Sauce! And pickle!
Jelly! Marmalade! Conserve!
Prepared and stored to last forever -
this autumn harvest I preserve....

My Garden - My Little Bit
My little bit of natural life.
Its biodiversity rife.
Frogs, bugs, butterflies, hedgehogs, mice.
Annuals, perennials, lice.
Fruit, cherries, blackberries, no strife!

All in peak condition, no blite.
Every day new finds excite!
New for the county too, quite nice.
My little bit!

Records have to be recorded… type.
New finds my contribution… life
Each new record another slice,
For what it takes I’ll pay the price.
Enjoyed by me and my dear wife.
My little bit!...
