Stephanus Marcus Book I
Canto 1
Verses 4 and 5
Stephanus Marcus rode his way toward gate
where sweetheart Guenevere did wait with rose.
Her wave drew Marcus' eyes that way with fate
and knight met maid at gate with those who chose.
Now he did quickly petals raise to nose
with haste gives he kiss sweet to lifted cheek.
Love whispers promise dear: "When lilac grows
again with blossoms low at Lystrom Creek,
when Saint has suffered final blow, you I'll soon seek".
No vale was better seen than Broughten Place;
such dale kept trees and flora forest green.
Twas Morley's gain, was given with sovereign's grace
but Liege must make that field a battle scene.
King Richard needed Saint Charles' favor keen
against the dreaded Saracenic host.
Which host did scathe all southern sheikdoms clean;
"To make all people Moslem", roared their boast.
King Richard needed take a passive role at most.

Stephanus Marcus Book I
Canto 1
Verses 2 and 3
Duke Saint Charles made unlawful claim to glade
in vale where many game for chase did hide,
without regard for sovereign's oath then made
to Morley early day last Whitsuntide.
Such oath was made baptismal time as plied
when robes bedecked the holy people white.
For pledging daughter, Katharine, as bride
to sovereign's brother, James, with great delight.
The chimes would peal amid autumn's cool saffron light.
The Holy See had issued ringing chorus
echoing Pontiff's edict fiat wide,
that conquered sheikdoms be set free with force
and Christians freed from danger need not hide.
Thus Frederick and Philip swore to guide
as many nobles willing bringing knights.
Duke Morley's knights were missing leaders' tide
as they went under grated gate with lights.
Their torches glowed again for Liege as other nights.
