as though endless life
ants and anthills rise and fall ---
midst snake intrusions

I know somewhere the round still goes
To sunset on a different eve
But here the sand between my throes
My aching spirit does relieve
And so my tired waves fold upon the shore
And the depth that stores pains
On the shallow beach finds space no more
To weigh my soul in rustless chains
Here alone I can hear God breathing bright
As evening's first and distant star
And in peace is now and in the coming night
My soul to hope is thrown ajar
For Sabbath comes restoring me to love, this
Nor jilted desire, nor chafed faith
Can ever sieged again; worship is happiness
And happiness my visions renovate
