Watch Your Ps and Qs

You’ve probably said it with good intent
yet without a clue as to what it meant?
Well, dear reader, relax. Thanks to my
research you can now bid a final goodbye
to many years of blissful ignorance
with certain knowledgeable confidence.

I’m referring, of course, to your use
of telling others to mind their Ps and Qs.
And more important, its use in a daily
conext of its original history –
in the days when England’s popular pubs
were more than gathering places or hubs
for drinking and eating but a magnet
for latest news and hottest gossip.

Thus, in this context, and to prevent
patrons from becoming overly inebriant,
the pub owner (to ensure sobriety)
made it his duty and responsibility
to count (or mind) a patron’s Ps and Qs
(Pints and Quarts) to restrain his abuse
or worse his destructive behavior
to many a pub owner’s displeasure
at losing his pub and loyal patrons
(likely his only source of income.
