Riding the lightening

The clouds are hanging on the hill,
it is a dreary day.
The gathered crowd is standing still,
there’s rawness midst the grey.

Outside the prison gates they wait,
predicting an appeal.
The air is pregnant with the weight,
awaiting a late deal.

Beyond the gates, the mood is grim,
a dead-man walks today.
Survival odds are none to slim,
Buoyed on one endless day.

She was accused of heinous crimes,
committed by her man.
Most senseless done in hellish times,
at random with no plan.

Yet calm she sits inside her cell,
caused by a pleasant peace.
Upon her secrets she must dwell,
her blisses never cease.

She fell in love at a young age,
and soon she bore his child.
A time in life when one’s not sage,
so young and oh so wild.

Soon learnt about his lethal ways,
amid her tears and fears.
To him resigned through dreadful days,
that slowly rolled to years.

Then came the time of their arrests,
she pleaded innocence.
No matter her pleas and protests,
in vain was her defence.

She was absolved of all the deaths,
but not that of her son
Denials were but wasted breaths,
a stake that’s never won.

The lawyers pushed her for the truth,
in mind grave doubts abound.
All efforts wasted by the sleuth,
no grave has yet been found.

The time has come to take the walk,
a joy spreads on her face.
She looks ahead and does not balk,
this faith she will embrace.
