Accentuate And Celebrate

As we approach the celebration
of our country's founding, one
could view the glass as half empty
Or half full. Or one could complain
about how far we have yet to go as a nation;
Or be divided over injustices and inconsistencies.

We could divide ourselves even more into Red and Blue states;
Or we could become more blended, truly the UNITED States.
One could criticize or berate our thriving Republic over
the things that we have yet to accomplish. Or one could
celebrate the good things and accentuate the positive.

As I consider this subject, I am reminded of a man I met
about 10 years ago. Sitruc was his name, and he began to
reflect upon a momentous conversation with his two sons.

Mr. Sitruc began relating to his sons that his achievements
and the things that he had accomplished in life were far
less than he had anticipated. He indicated to me that before he
could finish, he was halted by both his sons. In essence,
they related to him what they had observed of him and their
mother. From their perspective, his assessment was wrong.
His sons had concluded that their dad and mom were great
achievers of good and positive things.

From that family gathering, Mr. Sitruc had discovered a
gold mine of eternal values, a treasure cove of goodness
that he had took for granted or overlooked. On the contrary,
his sons never forgot the loveless they loved, the hungry
they fed, the naked they clothed, or the homeless they housed.

Mr. Sitruc went on to say that since that day, he has never
again minimized what had been accomplished; nor maximized
the things that have not been achieved.
