Today Dhara feels shelter-less
And Goddess of Learning, let down,
Learned, peerless men, patron-less,
King Bhoj having gone to heaven.

Note: King Munj and king Bhoj ruled kingdom of Malwa in Central India during 10th-11th CE. Their capital was Dhara, today’s Dhar. Sanskrit scholar Kalidas happened during the rule of Bhoj. Both were learned men. Once, king Bhoj wanted to know how people would feel when he is no more. So, on an expedition he was declared dead. When asked, poet Kalidas wrote this shloka on dead king. Adya Dhara nir aadhaaraa nir aalambaa sarasvatee |
Panditaam khanditaam sarve bhoja-raaje divam gate || Kalidas ||
