Night on The Seine
1939
Silver and gold from city lights
daub the black river
like brush strokes from VanGogh.
The Seine
murmurs against La Rive Gauche
where dreams of artists linger,
then turns to glide obediently against La Rive Droite
where politicians drink cognac
and talk of war.
We are in the middle of Time
in a small boat.
“You cannot leave me!” she commands.
“Of course not,” is my assurance.
“I shall neither be called nor needed."
"We have built the great Maginot Line,
and The Ardennes is too wooded to cross.
It is all talk, anyway."
The city drifts slowly by -
Le Grand Palias and Le Concorde
Champs Elysees,Notre Dame,
Swifter now - like the time,
"It would be madness to destroy such beauty."
“Besides, the British have pledged to come.”

The treasures in old books
Historic events,
The times that have been,
Adventures to live in,
Those wonderful dreams.
Thrillers and killers,
And spies by the score,
Dancing, romancing,
The heart can adore.
Warfare and combats,
The Maginot line,
Vampires and zombies,
To mess with the mind.
Magic and tragic,
So happy and sad,
Romans and Trojans,
The knight Galahad.
The past and tomorrow’s,
Fiction and fact,
Space and dimensions,
When aliens attack.
Visits from spirits,
The eerie old rook,
Pleasures and treasures,
When you open a book!

Just Me Being Me
what a strange realization
when I discovered
that I was giving
so much more than I got energetically
that I was dancing so fast
because I didn’t
want to see that my partner
was standing still
feet planted firmly
on the ground beneath her
throwing me the occasional bone
so I’d keep at it
keep entertaining her
allowing her to see
parts of me only the poet knows
until she could make
her end game somehow rational
I wonder if I should feel the fool
because I now realize
her Maginot line of fear
must be maintained at all cost through
smoke and mirrors
that pass for giving
then some tiny voice
scratched at the shadows
asking me if I was seeing the truth
and I ignored it because
I wanted what I wanted
I know better than to
ignore the inner voice
so even though I hurt
I could never blame her
for my pain and sadness when
all she did was be her self
and count on me being me…
