Creation

The glow of creation would fill the skies 
If we could but see with microwave eyes.
But light from that fire grows ever colder
As the Universe expands, as it grows older.

It is the glow from the luminescing 
Of electrons with protons; atoms forming 
When the Universe cooled sufficiently
And the light of creation was free. 

Light that traveled through billions of years, 
Through galactic voids and past quasars,
Until it came to this one section of space,
Came at last to this time and this place.

A glow that's the same in all directions,
A corollary of cosmic inflation.
But the birth of the Universe is hidden behind
That glowing wall, and beyond this we’re blind.

But gravitational waves from that birth
May yet be observed by observers on Earth,
And we could see then behind the wall,
Closer to the beginnings of it all.
