They smile like church people
front row teeth, polished shoes,
hands folded over gold-plated lies.
And America—
sweet tired America—
keeps mistaking volume for truth,
keeps mistaking a salesman
for a savior.
There are towers with names carved into them
like warnings no one read in time.
There are golf courses green as envy,
ballrooms glowing like kingdoms built
from unpaid invoices
and handshakes with devils
wearing silk ties.
The father stands at the center of it all
like a carnival barker dipped in bronzer and grievance,
calling every indictment a witch hunt,
every critic an enemy,
every law another thing
for poorer people.
Meanwhile the children circle the throne
with sharpened smiles.
One trademarks patriotism.
One sells certainty in little jars.
One hunts influence
the way wolves hunt soft animals in winter.
And the friends—
God, the friends—
they rise from the shadows of private dinners
and closed hotel doors,
laughing into champagne glasses
while contracts bloom like mold
behind the curtains.
Billions.
Not earned in the old way
with broken backs and factory whistles.
No.
This is the new American alchemy:
turn outrage into currency,
turn division into stock options,
turn flags into receipts.
And somewhere a woman works double shifts
under fluorescent lights
while a billionaire complains about persecution
on television.
Somewhere a veteran sleeps in his truck
while men born into marble bathrooms
speak of sacrifice.
Pamela Harris says that corruption is not only theft.
It is the slow teaching
that nothing sacred exists anymore.
That justice is decorative.
That truth is negotiable.
That if you are rich enough
you can stand in the middle of history
and dare morality to touch you.
But history always keeps receipts.
Even empires with gold curtains rot.
Even grifters grow old.
And the loudest man in the room
must someday face a silence
he cannot sue, brand, or bully away.
From Byron bay to Broome on rolling russet plains
beauty shine’s the Kimberly when the northern territory rains
My heart will always weep when the scent of wattle’s lost
gum trees out of sight my world lays unembossed
Kookaburra laughs as dawn lights us with grace
we really love to giggle even wearing egg on face
our words are sometimes drawled but wait theres a but
when we get excited ? is when things start heating up
In Pub’s and R.S.L’s your bound to meet good blokes
even cheeky sheilas who don’t mind a dirty joke
at everything we do we strive to reach the stars
even when we’re older and writing our memoirs
A country mixed in color of every different race
But every one of us Is a heartbeat of this place
creative souls are we building from red soil
everything we have was made from honest spoils
Kooris and the white folk get along alright
but sometimes when they drink they start aground to fight
the old men roar with laughter the ladies are aghast
publican runs yelling hes red enough to blast
Eucalypt and kangaroos are some of our trademarks
if you want to see real beauties our forests cant be past
mountain streams and waterfalls we really have it all
even in a snowfall we’ve had a bloody ball
Whiteness lines our shores kissed with foamy waves
lining round our border is a multitude of caves
rain-forest glistens plants are rich with life
I really hate to see them get in global strife
Cyclones rage our shores fire our summer nights
beauty rests within our hearts and red-gum minds
no different are our faces in this far-reaching world
but because a youthful land we are we’ve bowed our heads to toil

*R.I.P. Ann Leslie Cook, nee Turner*
At five months old, she posed for their family's neighbor, Dorothy Hope Smith, who drew a charcoal sketch of her for a Gerber's baby-food contest. That charcoaled sketch became Gerber's iconic label when they opened and produced their products in 1928. For nearly ninety-four years of her lifetime, she has been in American homes, as well as, abroad. She died in her St. Petersburg, FL., home, (11/20/1926-06/03/2022) at 95.

A BRIAN STRAND PREMIERE CHOICE

Humanity remains in control of all things living…or so they think.
They use and abuse what nature freely gives.
They think that they are entitled to it - not knowing that they increase their risk of eliminating scares recourses.
Mother nature is a self taught engineer. It tries to teach humanity a lesson every now and again to remind them of the fifty-fifty partnership that was once shook upon in the beginning.
The animal kingdom is being stripped of it's uniqueness. Humanity is extracting its's trademarks for its own pleasure.
Marine life is being drained of its life support.
The cannot see that the more they take, the less there will be
The beginning, middle and end - this is what life is all about. It's the never ending circle of life.
Humanity needs to uphold their end of the deal - otherwise they will have to face the consequences.
They will have to diminish their Carbon Footprint.
The human spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hand of man.
In the end the partnership between humanity and nature needs to be everlasting in order to maintain a steady balance
I joined this site called Poetry Soup
So I could write about turds or poop
I’m not sure that some folk in this group
Know humor, or are just out of the loop
I was stunned to be awarded Poem of the Day
I was so thrilled, I didn’t know what to say
Until trolls on the site made nasty remarks
But their bullying ways are their trademarks
At first Soup was fun I’d read work late at night
But this year I have hardly logged on to the site
It’s a pity that I’ve been deterred from writing
I sought peace and quiet and not back biting
My poetry style is straight from the heart
Who cares if I write about a foul smelly fart
I don’t care if folk don’t like poems on flatus
Because I write for fun not poet laureate status
Boohoo is bidding for Boo-Boo
But Yogi’s not seeking a deal,
He’s scanning the park for a picnic
Looking forward to his evening meal.
Warner Brothers deny their involvement
So investors are kept in the dark,
But rumours are spreading ’round Bedrock
And the restrooms of Jellystone Park.
Boohoo is bidding for Boo-Boo,
It’s becoming a sought-after brand;
For Yogi it’s deeply upsetting
And he’s drawing a line in the sand.
This fetish for gobbling-up trademarks
Is addictive - a turbulent torrent,
So the trustees of Hanna-Barbera
Have rescinded Mister Ranger’s warrant.
Boohoo is loving the limelight,
Printing posters to boast of expansion.
Directors are driving round Dorset
Seeking out an available mansion.
Animated heroes fall silent,
Suppressing their deep-seated rage,
They’ve vowed to stop buying new costumes,
Thought bubbles stay blank on the page.
Snagglepuss is sacking his agent
Whose alibi soon fell to pieces,
Wacky Races have cancelled two meetings
Though Mister Jinks is still chasing meeces.
Huckleberry Hound is blue in the face,
So upset that he’s leaving his kennel tea.
Boohoo’s directors have not thought this through,
Analysts think they’ll soon pay a penalty.
Now Matalan, Primark and Peacocks
Are struggling hard to pay rates,
They see this young upstart named Boohoo
Just sealing competitors’ fates.
The Jetsons are locked in a hangar
Refusing to talk to the press,
While Cindy is comforting Yogi
Because bears aren’t accustomed to stress.
Just how many trademarks are needed
To cater for everyone’s tastes?
With so many trend-setters in lockdown
Periodically measuring waists.
The Jellystone team is downhearted
When they note that admissions are down,
With Boohoo now trashing their legacy
It’s the first time they’ve seen Muttley frown!
Yes, Boohoo is bidding for Boo-Boo,
It’s becoming a sought-after brand;
For Yogi it’s deeply upsetting
And the prospects for fashion seem bland.
