Long Lifebirthday Poems

Not Another One

I counted all the candles,
Upon my birthday cake;
Surely I don’t need all of them,
There must be some mistake!

They’re melting all the icing,
I cannot blow them out;
For someone with so many candles,
You’d think I’d have more clout!

Let me try to count them one more time,
I’ll group them in clusters of ten;
I burnt my fingers on the wax,
Trying to rearrange all of them.

There’s ten and twenty and thirty of them,
My God how did this happen to me!?
There still are two more clusters left,
And then a group of three.

Who’s idea was it to stick burning candles
On birthday cakes in the first place?
Certainly not someone of my age;
They singed the hair off of my face!

Do you still get your birthday wish
If to blow them out it takes six tries?
I cannot see if my wish came true,
The smoke is in my eyes!

Well, I looked into the mirror
And still look all of 53!
So the answer to the question above,
Is no longer a mystery.
