Their Simple Beauty

Baby birds, it's said, are born not knowing
their notes. They learn them from their mother's
throats in the way children learn their ABCs
at parental knees, muh muh muh becoming mother,
da da da, daddy; cheep cheep cheep, a cantata.
That being so, do poets find a poetic ear
in the sphere of their predecessors?

Young, with island sand and salt my milieu,
my concerts were the calls of shorebirds,
the forlorn foundling cries of gulls, the staccato
siren of a tern, should you carelessly venture
too close to her nest; the stuttering dance-step
of sandpipers, miniscule but mighty. Then,
there were the rest: foraging land birds, seeking
fare left by the incoming tide, their darkness
incongruous on the purity of a beach.

There was a time, walking to my garage
when I found a songbird dead in my driveway;
its small body supple, still warm to the touch,
not ready to die just yet like all of us. I
placed it in a box (ashes to ashes, bird to sky),
laid it to rest under the fig tree in my backyard,
and not knowing its persuasion, I
fashioned a cross of sticks over the fresh
earth, believing we shared the sanctity of
simple beauty, the brevity of life.

Near a lake where I live now, sibling to the sea,
briny by proximity, birdsong is rampant
in early spring. I have heard the 'death bird',
he of the shrill one-note filled with foreboding,
who heralded the passage of a dying husband
in an interminable summer of illness. Here,
there are the sharps and flats of ordinary
choristers, and one whose mother was surely
a coloratura soprano in a former life.

This one whose concert halts me spellbound,
turns me to stone (not salt) with his serenade of
couplets, no two the same, some so comical I laugh
out loud to the absent cars and senseless concrete
of my parking lot. He sings and sings, never
abated, nothing by rote, and I? I wait, heart in
my throat, should he be the songbird from
under the fig tree, reincarnated.

Abcs

What is wrong with the people
Today?
A bunch of dumb people are leading
The way.

 Seeks ATTENTION,
You find ABUSE.
  If you hang,
Hang loose.

  Lacking BACKBONE,
Loud and BOASTFUL.
  Mass shooting sprees,
They go postal.

  They can’t CAPTIVATE,
They CAPTURE.
  Stuck on the same page,
No new CHAPTER.

DIFFERENT is not the same as
DIFFICULT.
  Aiming for change,
Get the same result.

  It is better to EDUCATE,
Then to ESTIMATE.
  No more wild child,
Domesticate.

  Try Being FRIENDLY,
No FURY.
  Patience is the key,
Don’t act PREMATURELY.

  GIVE more,
Less GREEDY.
   Take care of self,
Less needy.

   HEAL don’t
HATE.
   Be selective when choosing
A mate.

   INFLUENCE without
INSULT.
It is not age that makes
You an adult.

   Be JOYFUL,
Forget JEALOUS.
   Relax don’t be
Rebellious.

   Show KINDNESS,
Don’t KILL.
It takes time to hone your
Skill.

   More time LEARNING,
LESS LECTURE.
   Leave the drama,
Bring pleasure.

   MORE MENTALITY,
Less MACHINE.
   Cut out,
If it’s not your scene.

   Try to NEGOTIATE,
Cap your NERVES.
    will happen,
Crap will occur.

   OBSERVE don’t
OPPOSE.
That door is
Closed.

   More PASSION,
Less PAIN.
   Work harder,
Don’t complain.

   Seeking QUALITY,
Less QUANTITY.
   Side-step tragedy,
Enjoy the comedy.

   REPAIR before you
REPLACE.
Is it the kill or the
Chase.

   To SAVE means
SACRIFICE.
   You must suffer on way
To paradise.

   Better to TREAT,
THEN TRICK.
   Take your time,
Not so quick.

   Choose the UNDERDOG,
Avoid the UNABLE.
   Diversity instead of
Racial.

   VALUE before
VARIETY.
   Things clear up with
Sobriety.

  Be WILLING,
Less WORRY.
   Slow ride,
No hurry.

   Don’t XANAX to
XTREME.
   BOLO for a snake
Or a scheme.

   Better to say YES,
Than not YET.
   Recognize an incoming
Threat.

   Be ZANY and ZOOM with
ZEAL.
   Just saying,
Keeping it real.

Life Forms: the Abcs of Being

A living organism accustomed to existing alive…adapted, acclimatized.
Breathing bodies, beautifully behaving as created, before being theorized.
Corporeal creatures controlled by character traits, occasionally compromised.
Divergent life forms delicately merged into a “Web of Life”, perfectly devised.
Entities experiencing individuality, establishing existence uncompromised,
Frolicking through life; incessantly looking for forever, mesmerized.
Gaining moral fiber through God given guidance sometimes, getting baptized.
Happily honing one’s persona hoping to help dreams become materialized,
Insightfulness encircles one’s sense of self to initiate a life-path individualized.
Jovial jesters, bigwigs, or judges with judgments apprized.
Kooky cool-cats, celebrities, or clowns cleverly disguised.
Laundry maids, lucky leaders, or racers with wins realized.
Milkmen, fishermen, or firemen with departments downsized.
Noble work is any work of which a lifetime is comprised.
Orchids, oxalis, oak trees, and sellers of fruits franchised.
Penguins, porcupines, parrots, and peacocks with feathers prized.
Questions surround the beings of which this world is comprised.
Reverence remembers Noah's ark and the lives that were remised.
Scientists study animals, cells, and quarks minuscule-sized.
Tomorrows are predicted with their remedies advised.
Ultimately, all beings will be recycled in to earth…revised.
Victorious are earth's environments enriched by life's demise.
Worldly ways and wisdom's walk in the end shall be surprised.
Xanadu sought requires the power to choose right and be not chastised.
Yesterday is gone, but life-luminaries were long ago stylized.
Zestfully living righteously marks the path perfection realized.

The Teaching Task

Lockdown over, I had to head to school
my pupils waiting to learn the golden rule
I got ready and put on that mask
following the health protocols is a must
How would I each word articulate?
and those whole lessons explicate!

***

Principals in their towers have their say
and teachers, Skills For Life, have to convey
So eager to see my pupils and join the classroom
no time to spend with colleagues in the teachers room
Just virtual wishes.. Love and hugs
and the joy of all the social media tags.

***

I looked weird, in need of a breathing space
with that mask and my glasses, nothing remained of my face!
High time I proceeded with the warming up
avoiding to preach or give a negative heads up
A perplexed look in my pupils eyes I could see
a strong desire to build in them a motivational esprit

***

Nothing has changed, me doing all the talking
in day dreams they seemed to be sinking
My voice in the void echoed, "am I speaking Chinese?
I'm afraid, these are but the English language abcs!"
'If you can't turn the page, burn the book'. "Would you please paraphrase?
not all at once, please, one at a time as always!"

***

"Sorry teacher, we didn't bring our textbooks"
I was maddened but they got nothing from my looks
"Teacher, isn't burning books wrong and bad?!"
I felt deeply disappointed but could nothing add!
I see you've been learning English off by heart!
and with revision you've torn your minds apart!

***

We are wise and curious, teacher! glued to our smart phones
learning from Peaky Blinders.. Breaking Bad.. and Game of Thrones!
I thanked God I was wearing that shielding mask
I could resist my rage and carry off the teaching task.
To my pen, a deep gratitude for such a relief
such a consuming task could make funny and brief.

Premium Member Getting An 'A' In Love

Well I’m seventy-six, but in love, I still feel
Like a sixteen-year-old (whole ‘permission to learn’ bit!)
I sit on the left! Sigh! Dad’s far to my right!
But it’s me in the driver’s seat! God, it’s surreal,
For I find I’m both judging and fear I’ll get judged!
Mom’s love felt accepting, but she’s not in sight!

Yes, time hints I’ll survive most mistakes that I make,
Risk’s (small) people I love seem to feel, see, or notice!
God! Love looks so simple (like child’s ABCs)!
Yet those loved can be hurt should I not hit the brake
Soon enough, or the petal (when speed is love’s poultice?)
Is love earned by man or more ego’s dis-ease?

Should I sit on the bench or step up to the plate?
Are life’s riches our ‘talents’ or more found in ‘effort
Expended’ when odds seem against our success?
It seems likely not asking means I’ll get no date!
Is it folly to think one (alone) finds a comfort
A couple can’t dream of, a duo access?

Is love chained by my questions or more entertained?
Some philosophers say we find love in ‘acceptance!’
Of what, may I ask? What ‘I see’ with ‘no doubts?’
If I fear love’s not perfect, can love be constrained
By a thought that persists, its denial insistence
I know what is right? Love is real if it shouts?

Or, is love beyond grading, and just who we are
As God’s children, His family! Grace is sufficient!
We grow toward His light independent of soil!
Do we choose ground where planted, stoke light from a star,
Make our parents, whose love is our birthright, omniscient?
All guidance must fail us that feelings embroil!

The Meditations of His Heart

For over 30 years he has spoken to
us about the goodness of God
and for over 30 years he has given us
the meditations of his heart
with the words out of his mouth he presented to us
the devil and the dove
he even made us aware of
the kiss with no love
he apprised of the gospel according to an ass
and revealed to us what a jack
he instructed us to go back to the basics
by learning the ABCs of Christ in fact
and that a word from our sponsor is to have
a heart of Thanksgiving
just do not quench the spirit in our quest to be free
as we abide by thanksliving
now fit for the fight fortified with faith
knowing all beings with God
and to prepare for perfect storms by keeping
5 smooth stones ready to impart
to have an attitude of gratitude
even when God messes up our plans
now able to worship like wise men
once we've handed God our hands
to be last at the cross first at the tomb
as we chillax and wait on the Lord
for we have way too much in common as Palm Sunday people
living under the influence now in accord
and because we are our brother's keeper
which has happified our lives
we are living our dreams giving ourselves high fives
for in the spirit we now thrive
for over 30 years this man of God
has preached about Jesus
and for over 30 years Dr. Arlee Arkofa
has continuously poured into us
and because the words out of his mouth
and the meditations of his heart
Has benefited us the most
let us all stand in celebration of him
our Christmas gift from our heavenly host

Premium Member INTERVIEW WITH A GRAIN OF SAND

Sand of wisdom, I seek for your counsel
since you're prudent in warning against building on sinking sand...

Oh, your choice to interview me is commendable...
well, take these ABCs sands for character-building:

Always take a firm stand whether you're on rocky or sandy ground
Blossom beyond sandy soil if that's the only one available
Carve creations circumspectly using sand in your design...
Dare to do the impossible through God Who made sand everywhere
Explore* more, to learn about the greatness of the sand...

Wow! I am now getting your sandy point...
Are there some more?

Free yourself from getting sandwiched through faith's fortitude flight
Gear toward gracious glow while basking along sandy shore
Heartily share hope as you collect sand for your hour-glass gifts
Instruct about healthy benefits of walking along the sand on barefoot
Jubilantly pursue your dream of painting sunset brightening white sand...

Yes, yes... I will surely publish your advice
May I have your parting words, please?

Keep on appreciating life as gift, bearing in mind sand's vitality
Live along leading of the Lord, leaping high, leaving footprints in the sand!

Thanks so much!
