I long to feel the lifting deck
Soar o'er the waves as on we trek
wind in the face and to exult
elation, joy, the end result.
No feeling like this anywhere
the unwary novice it will ensnare
and once the spell has been absorbed
life changing feelings will not be curbed.
At times when seas are out of hand,
and gales of wind scream off the land,
when racing 'fore at furious pace,
Exhilaration finds its place.
Spirits soar and feelings glide,
as force and balance coincide,
and thoughts that this must surely be,
attainment of life's epitome.
A landsman knows not the emotion,
that lilting, soaring, locomotion,
brings to enlightened men like me,
who experience the pull of the sea.

I never thought that there would be
A landsman here in Tennessee
Who shares my background and my ways
And celebrates my holidays.
A chance encounter - who'd expect
The east and south to so connect?
A few quick words, enough to tell
This person knows from kvetch and kvell.
Surprisingly, our paths crossed twice.
In Memphis, once would not suffice;
Where strangers want to share their food,
There's haimish in that attitude.
It might be fate that brought this meeting -
Lively, fun but oh, so fleeting
To remind us - look around
For kindred spirits may be found.

Chinese people everywhere
Are cheering for the Knicks.
They’re rooting for their favorite fan,
Who’s managed to transfix.
Of course, they want their team to score
But whether lose or win,
They’ll get the thrills they need
By chanting for their own J. Lin.
For Jeremy, a Harvard man,
Is living, breathing proof
A brainy Asian athlete
Isn’t anything to spoof.
I get the Chinese mindset
And I understand their pride;
Since folks like them in sports are few,
Their joy is justified.
It feels familiar, ‘cause I knew
That feeling, oh so rich,
When years ago, I got to see
A fellow landsman pitch.
His name was Sandy Koufax,
His religion one I share;
And every Jewish baseball fan
Of that was well aware.
When you’re in the minority,
It really feels so good
To celebrate a star who comes
From your part of the ‘hood.
