I wonder when it first began
these whisperings that can
either spread an alarm
or tarnish anothers charm.
I wonder when it became
ugly gossip to enflame.
Did the whisper start as a tickle for the ear
or the need to speak ever so near
to our wooly mammoth prey
in that long ago day?
First pronounced as godsip
by that mysterious ancient lip
meaning a godparent
or a close friend sent
to listen and presumably
repeat the news of me
to give to you and then it became
the Let Me Tell You About ... game.
This art of idle chatter
about nothing to really matter,
all this second-hand news
is just a way to excuse
our obsessive need to tattle.
