You can’t take it with you
After you’re gone
You can’t take it, nor
Can you take a song
You can’t take a maybe
Nor a bowl of gravy
But it doesn’t just mean
That you can’t take the green

What I can’t take
Is taking that saying
But I’ll leave the hens
And eggs they’re laying
You can’t take the past
The day after your last
Nor one of the days
When you’re taken away.

You can’t take old dreams
Even with pretty please
But it’s good you can’t take
Cumquats nor peas
You can’t take a number
Nor two-by-four lumber
You can’t take your time
When you’re out of time

You can’t take ideas
That were in your head
Because that and it
Are of no use for the dead
But you can make amends
Before your life ends
And take your best shot
Giving life all you got
