How fondly I recall the joy
Of out mudlarking as a boy,
Along the riverbank we went
Where clarty, happy hours were spent.
Seeking treasures in the mud
Up to our knees, there we stood,
We'd laugh so hard at the yell,
When one of us had slipped and fell.
We cried aloud like shrieking loons
At this creature from the black lagoon,
His eyes agog, there he stood,
Head to toe, naught but mud.
We were adventurers of old
Seeking jewels, and chests of gold,
But usually on our intrepid hikes
We found our share of rusty bikes.
It mattered not for back we went
These summer days were heaven sent,
Explain that to a techno kid,
They'll probably think you've flipped your lid.
It could have been but yesterday
When on those riverbanks we played,
I hear the laughter, feel the mud,
Happy days, for life was good.
