I’m lying on the edge of a dark drifting ceiling,
Too far below, yet falling through reeling.
This bed of clouds brings comfort but teeming,
The buzzing of insects infesting the dreaming.
Bed-bound by bolas which winding by brain,
Dizzying in effort while I untie in strain.
Cries muffled by specks that trample the feigned,
Droning ‘til deaf, again silent in pain.

Tools gathering,
Hunters searching,
Moving slowly,
Scanning everywhere,
Animal sighted,
Silently approaching,
Bolas throwing,
Spears ripping,
Blood splattering,
Animal dead,
Men dragging,
Meat cooking,
Men feasting,
Men sleeping.

The heat sultry like a weight of skin
Saps my sinews and melt my bones
I am drained by the old legacy of sin
The trees too droop on sizzled stones
And from the black face of the street
A steamy billow rises like a net for fish
Or some bolas at my crumbling feet
Makes me want to run by only the wish
This is the tropic daytime when the sun
Its gasses pour and route men to sleep
This iss the tropics where life still goes on
While the heat my strength like harvest reap
And do you say there it hotter burns than
This? And this the distant heat of that
The immovable furnace of unreconciled man
Frivolous around the fire like a glad gnat

This year while England keeps her diamong jubilee
Jamaica's independence grows under the monarchy
And I know that Nanny's longing to set this land free
Meant national ownership of our borowed soveriegnty
What shall I tell Juan De Bolas, or Cudjoe today
What will I to Tacky or noble Bogle dare now say
That Sam Sharpe's legacy is not understood, may
We say to Marcus, not yet uhuru, wait another day
O country men, the hour is late, let us rise up today
And sweep the debris that deluge our history away.
