Best Sontime Poems
I didn’t mind when you left me.
It was time to split; I agree.
We had our life and it was done,
But why’d you take away my son?
He needed his father, can’t you see?
You cheated him; you cheated me.
I think of those days flyin' kites,
Catchin’ fireflies summer nights,
Jumpin’ into the swimmin’ hole.
These treasured times meant more than gold.
He needed his father, can’t you see?
You cheated him; you cheated me.
Those tears he cried, wavin' goodbye,
I turned away, my tears to hide.
You took him many miles away,
But I still think of him each day.
He needed his father, can’t you see?
You cheated him; you cheated me.
I call and you hang up the phone.
Next time I see him, he’ll be grown.
The bond we had was special to us,
But it vanished with that Greyhound bus.
He needed his father, can’t you see?
You cheated him; you cheated me.

Our hearts were filled with joy,
when we found out it’s a boy.
We called everyone we knew,
as my wife’s belly grew.
The days begin to fly,
as the time was growing nigh.
I talked to my son at night,
through her belly with delight.
This special moment of mine,
I like to call it belly time.
Sang him songs and read him books,
as my wife gave me funny looks.
Crazy as it may sound,
my connection was profound.
Couldn’t wait for the day,
to hold and teach him to play.
This was my time with my son,
unborn but a lot of fun.

*Inspired by Deborah Guzzi’s contest “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby.”
I was born underwater with lungs oversized,
With gills immature in a world full of smog,
I'm filling petition to be cauterized,
And end other chapter in life’s fragile log.
I was born black and white with extremities gray,
The plaintiff accuses what I might hide,
It's nothing but SOUL constantly at play,
With spoonfuls of turquoise rolling down off life's slide...
Implosion of rainbows will probably be
The cause of my passing unknown and alone.
When thrown overboard and deep into sea
I'll finally return to my home long time gone...
I've moved in a place with no windowless chamber,
Where time has no meaning and waiting is painless,
If I had any hopes, I swear - don't remember...
And don't recognize him, his sorrow is senseless.
I have died underwater, reborn in blue nights,
Don't need oxygen to play with the whales.
Remember when watching those great Northern Lights
That Mother is smiling behind Nature’s veils.

I DID IT ON MY OWN
I DID IT ON MY OWN
IN WORN OUT TENNIS SHOES
YET I GOT OF THE PHONE AND
TOOK THE TIME TO COME HOME
MY MOM IN TEARS LETTING ME GO
EVEN THOSE SHE’D DID, I WANTED ME TOO
I KNOW SHE’S RIGHT IT ISN’T MY TIME
BUT I WANT TO PROVE I CAN MAKE A DIME
I STOPPED BY TO GET ONE MORE PAIR
I LEFT BEHIND JUST TO SEE HER FACE
LETTING HER AND MY GRANDMA HOLD ME
STILL FEELING OUT OF PLACE
AS I WALK BACK OUT THAT DOOR
SHE SAYS I CAN ENTER BACK IN ANY TIME
BELIEVE IN MY MIND HOPING I’LL BE FINE
WEARING OUT MY TENNIS SHOES ONE MORE TIME
GETTING OFF THE PHONE
TAKING THE TIME TO GO BACK HOME
JUST TO HOLD THE BOTH OF THEM AGAIN
SAYS THIS WILL ALWAYS BE HOME
EVEN THOSE I’M ON MY OWN
I STILL CATCH A RIDE TO SCHOOL
DO MY HOMEWORK, WHILE LOOKING FOR THAT JOB
TRYING NOT TO BE A SLOB
TELLING MY FRIEND I’VE GOT TO GO
NOT CHARGING MY PHONE
TAKING THE TIME TO SEE MY LOVE ONES
AND MAKING MY LAST CALL
AS I GIVE MORE THAN MY ALL
THERE IS ANOTHER PAIR WAITING FOR ME
AND I KNOW WHERE
I am still his mother
My word should matter beyond all other.
If I say no
Then nothing else shall go.
When I tell him yes
Please do not second guess.
I know he is almost eighteen
And pretty soon it won't matter what I mean.
Right now he still lives at home
Soon he will be on his own.
When the time comes for him to go
I will let him, this I know.
At this time he is my only child with me,
My requests, I think, are not that unreasonable, gee.
Once he is on his own away from me,
I promise, I will let him be.
What else is there to say, other
Than that I am still his mother.
