Promise of Love

Their dreams filled their heads
As they drove up the hill
To the orphanage, they hoped and prayed
For a child that laid
Swaddled and warm
In a crib, to bring home on this day

But a little bit older,
The child seemed cold
Yet a smile was worn on his face
So the couple agreed
To love and to feed
This child they’ll take from this place

And though they have nothing
No money in the bank
No brand new house
But to the child they’ll give a home
As parents they swear
To give all love and to care
To treat this child as if was their own

The dark of the night
And the child he cried
A burning horrible wail
She’s a mother now
And ran to his side
Her loving was not meant to fail

She took and she held
So tight, bosom swelled
As he hushed and fell back asleep
He’s her child now
So much love to allow
Her son, forever to keep

And though they have nothing
No money in the bank
No brand new house
But to the child they’ll give a home
As parents they swear
To give all love and to care
To treat this child as if was their own

He is a man now
With a wife of his own
Yet barren as his mom and his dad
To the car they had gone
A new road they’re now on
To the place he was as a lad

They plan to adopt
To share all they’ve got
Though nothing they have to their name
But it’s love that they’ll give
For a child to live
To grow happy and love just the same

And though they have nothing
No money in the bank
No brand new house
But to the child they’ll give a home
As parents they swear
To give all love and to care
To treat this child as if was their own

Golden Rules

A baby is born; it cries the umbilical cord is cut
The baby learns to crawl, eat, walk, and many other things on their own, looking back they
seem so simple to learn for us as human beings, after all everyone does it
A baby isn’t a baby anymore but a child
You teach them to ride a bike, throw a ball, and they scrape a few knees in the process
Adolescence hits and they go from wanting to be taught to wanting to learn on their own
Every moral they were taught is wrong, every lesson you tried to show them they think is
Wrong
This adolescent is now a grown up, they want to do things on their own but want a guiding
hand from time to time like their childhood
This grown up is now a full blown adult, they have children and the cycle starts again, with
those parents in what were once your shoes
Their children grow up and they see everything that they put you through in their
adolescence and start to realize all of those lessons they once though were silly are now
Golden Rules
All the while you grow older and realize you made mistakes, but for all of the wrong choices
there were good ones
You age and start a reverse process that your child once took
Simple things that once were easy for you are now a difficult task
The bathroom is so close but so far away, walking from one end of the house is like a child
walking for the first time, wobbly and a near spill from time to time.
All the while people are looking on seeing the regression and learning another lesson
In your aging a lesson is being taught once again, a great lesson so simple but hard to
realize in our dumb youth
It isn’t what you are when you leave this world, it’s the memories and lessons you leave
behind for generations. The legacy you leave with your loved ones.

Who Do You Choose

Your father said
Don’t waste your time
His focus now
Are my daughters of mine

What he doesn’t know
Is the girls are okay
It’s our son who needs us
At the end of the day

I spoke to our youngest
And said what I feel
For her it’s unending
My love is so real

She does everything right
Such a gift to me
And yet my focus
Is the child who won’t see

I take away
From the daughter who tries
To be everything
And has never told lies

She deserves better than this
I do understand
But it’s so very hard
To make a child a man

Be what have I hoped
And know that is there
So full of love
And one day will care

Care for me
As I do for him
And worry and fret
That life won’t be grim

The path that he’s taken
Does not bode well
Jail’s his last option
His mistakes are my hell

On the Birds and the Bees

Telling our child of the
birds and the bees is not
always easy and not all will
it please. Some of us
hem and some of us haw,
while others like detail
when explaining nature's law.
It's not always easy but this
I believe, to learn from the past
our child must hear, of the of the
birds and the bees and we must be clear.

Abandoned In America

Her mind,
four years old,
was once eighty-two.
Her age, eighty-nine,
is two-timing.

Her silky white hair
was once black, every strand.
The child she became is beautiful.
She laughs with the first light,
and moans the day's end;
she is a child her grand daughter’s age.

Bowed, her posture.
Crooked, her knees.
Her eyes seek the moments lost,
making it hard for me to find her needs.
This room is a jail cell,
this place is a nightmare.

Today is quickly forgotten;
she lives in the bygone.
She’s abandoned and lonely;
it’s all in her gaze.
She looked at me hopefully;
her words pierce my core:
“I’m from America and I want to go home.”
She doesn't believe her beloved
would do her this wrong.
