Academic Confessions

Sometimes when the calypso music explodes
Shards of memories glistening with my pain
My heart like a rhumba box sits silent again
Where slow surfs lap granite doors, genius erodes
The barriers that dreams could stream and rise
Like sprays fogless flowering the coastal skies.

And as academics meander through misty thoughts
Turning to me, inviting my precision of words
I am in the web of comparisons caught, herds
Of histories shepherdless now in stagnant paths
Tremble in the shivering winds of changes here
I represent the hopes anchored in ancient fear.

My education did not come the common way
But from libraries and borrowed books I took
The knowledge that in high schools would hook
No test, using baitless syllabus to stairs the day
Upward from ghetto streets and gang embrace
Scholared by ambition, I get my college place.

I am a kite today, with my string grounded still
In sugarcane fields of happiness, loud streets
Where sellers hawk their wares and love meets
Twinkling eyes, signals to a secret fruiting hill
Where school-less days I set my mind to change
The arguments that listed you and I as strange.

Where Do All the Unwanted Teachers Go?

Where do all the unwanted teachers go?
When our economy suffers so?

Budgets continue to be cut
Putting public education in a major rut

“Become a teacher and make an impact!”
But instead unemployed teachers are in line for food stamps

They earned their credentials: teaching certificate and degree
They’ve applied for teaching jobs from here to Tripoli

“Get some experience by subbing for a year”
The year came and went and they’re still here

Year two proved to be even more trying
Which has only left them crying

“How can we survive on such an inconsistent paycheck?”
We have our own children to support and protect

Thousands in our state alone
Why can we not find a school for these teachers to call home?

Their passion for teaching is evident
A more rewarding career could not be dreamt

So, where do the unwanted teachers go?
For many we simply do not know

Their certificates are left collecting dust on the wall
While they earn minimum wage in the food court at the mall

Some returned to their corporate jobs that left them stressed
Still others weren’t even that blessed

“Unemployed” is the title they hold
Anxiously awaiting the day they will be told

“You’re hired!”

Regret

Oh dear Lord
Who is this person who does not know?
Chooses not, to learn of the world,
And expand their knowledge of all Your things beautiful.
Are they not but a waste of body?
If they choose not to learn of all Your creations,
And to walk in Your world with eyes shut to further education of Your structures,
Do You not cry in confusion,
And regret free will?

Premium Member I Passed His Test

our hearts beat alike
where ivy grows and gutters
overflow, diplomas no
match for life's true test-
if you pass, salvation smiles
on those that pay it forward-
I only need look
to the least of my brothers,
their smile means I passed the test
