COGNIZANT BUT NOT REPENTANT

Her baptism with fire did not provide her healing
as in dust and grime, sharp memories still arise.
The arch of her wide, blue, eyes showed cognizance
but not repentant for long ago actions of the man who
stifled her youth. She despaired.

Shoulder-length is her crown of hair. She has no money,
she modeled naked to earn her stay, this led her far away.
Beyond her, the world died and recovered but she rose
like a cork upon the tide.

Her ruined innocence birthed a fruit of cruel, curled longing.
Spent now, she's in dreamless state; her heart-crimson lips
and flashing red cheeks have been honeyed with whiskey's taste,
mascara snaked about the pale, spiraling emptiness of her eyes.
Yes, she has been defaced; past ghosts hover and infest,
yet, her posture relaxed as she sat in solitude on the balcony,
noiseless, reminiscing by gone days; haunted by dreams
of might have beens before abuse destroyed her thoughts of truth._

Poems By Vicki Acquah

Cognizant:

You have shown to me
my GREATNESS
- YOU
Having been discerning
But were not always
in agreement
You were there for me.
AWARE OF ME.'

You have known me
in my weakest flesh
You have marveled
at my strong spirit.

I will have to visit
you when I transition.
You will know it's me still.

Not like some" Duppie "
in a third rate cinema !
When I Come to you,
I will whisper poetry
loudly and crassly-
in your ear,
in my stern voice.

"Yes it tis I" -
I will say..
You know me.
So when the air is not stirring.
I will be as a gentle breeze
floating over
your body,caressing you.

Whilst your perception
reveals me to your conscious.
When OTHERS- don't get me-
CANNOT FEEL me ,
CANNOT SEE ME.

Cognizant you are -
of my existence.
Awake - you are
in my dreams
and my reality.
WHILE others slept on me.

You were fascinated by all of me,
analyzing the
" tic tic" of my clock"
Too aware of my very being.

Alert, even to my batting lashes.
responding
with that certain look -
You'd address my emotions,
my humor and my dread.

Conscious of each
others existence
sometimes we'd clash.
Wittingly we'd exchange love taps.
stimulating the intellectual.

I am your muse-for now
You are my smile for today.
Often times you'd
relent -pretending to be
simple, soft and unassuming.
Allowing me to be Just where I am

Within one's inner shrine
Being with the Divine
Humans attain fullness
Devoid of all illness...!
Spiritual powers
Like heavenly showers
Fall on human conscience
Destroying all non-sense...!
Like germs disinfect home
Like ever fertile loam
Illnesses far hidden
Immunity-ridden...
Human self into God
Merges lovingly awed
Turns into single whole
With body, mind and soul...!

In all life's effort
Whether big or small things
Learn to appreciate.

Let Your Mind Be Cognizant

L-et your mind be cognizant,
U-sing your critical thinking;
Z-ealously be apprehensive, know what the risk may bring.

J-ust let your mind be cognizant
A-nd aware of the threat ahead;
V-icious lie of the devil
I-s lurking to deceive your head.
E-arly January twenty-eighth, let your spirit be triumphant;
R-efrain from being unwitting, let your mind be cognizant.
