Solace In the Ghetto

As I stared out my project window into the streets were the predators never
seemed to sleep and the dope heads that kept the neighbors in the private homes on
pins and needles as they prowled the street, looking for the next cash cow to supply their drug needs. In the alley where we would play baseball during the daytime against the old trash bin, at night it served as the hiding place for the drug boys dope and guns…It’s sometimes hardto believe that decent people do live here in this place where I live, but they do.

I don’t know how? But really they do, I swear. The alleyway was littered with so much broken glass on the ground, sometimes I would pretend that it was diamonds and would dream of running out one morning and picking it all up and then I would be rich like the people who lived in the private homes up on the hill. At night from my window in the summertime I could smell their grills cooking some expensive meat, that seem to overload my sense and make my belly growl in a hopeless thought that I might somehow get to taste it.

In the distance sirens blare in the middle of the night as the ambulances race to the causalities of the night life. I can still recall those house parties that never seem to end, that’s until the men in blue decided to finally answer the calls and put an end to their night fun, but by that time they were all drunk and doped out or found a mate for the night…as they all spread out onto the side streets like cockroaches when you turn on the light and then shots rang out in the calm distance of the night. People scatter into the night.

My eyelids are now so heavy I can barely hear my own thoughts inside my head. When all of sudden my door flings open, standing there in the doorway I can make out a shadow, I take a deep breath and continue to play like I’m asleep. Wow, it was only my mother, just checking in on her only investment for her future dream of a doctor or lawyer that would not have to deal with this mess, she shuts my door after seeing that I was okay…as she takes a deep sigh of relief, knowing she could take solace that her child was fast asleep.

Fresh Cut Grass

Smell of cut grass,
brings back memories
of better summers
as dear childhood chums,

we would play until
way past dark and
sit on that grass
so green and fresh.

Wishing on falling stars,
coming down from heaven,
telling stories and
watching fireflies.

As dew fell on the ground
in search of night crawlers,
we would find so many
into the can we would place them.

Voices calling to us,
our fun would end until
tomorrow night and more
wishes we would make.

Petey's Hallowe'En

Alone inside the big armchair he gazes at the clock
Soon he would be dressing up to go around the block

This Hallowe'en he would be nine and could wear his batman suit
To go out trick or treating and gather up his loot

Promptly at six he started out with promises of fun
But must be back by nine p.m. to get his homework done

He filled his sack at every house as he rapped on every door
And loaded up a ton of sweets a dentist would abhor

He heard the clock ont he village tower chiming half past eight
And knew he must get cracking or else he would be late

The night seemed quiet and eerie and the kids seemed to have fled
As most had done their homework and were heading up to bed

The wind blew up and scattered leaves came racing down the street
They made a scary rustling sound that frightened batman Pete

The moon did glow through the clouds that night like a giant Cheshire cat
And suddenly from behind a tree there appeared a gruesome bat

He took to his heels quickly as it had started in to pour
And flashes of lightening streaked overhead as he headed for his door

This was too much for Petey boy who started in to moan
"I think next year, I'll take some pal - I don't wanna go alone!'

Africa

Ive seen Skies light up my mind with interludes of lightning so breathtaking
that the aftershock of the Thunder served as a reminded to breath
Its power and beauty danced along the background of a shadowy mountain horizon
While the lightning rods glowed with anticipation in the distance enticing the Sky to join the
earth
and the deluge of an afternoon storm set to the time of nature

Woken and slept beside the land twith its wide open Veld
Sat under a warm sun and day dreamed of a childhood i could scarcely remember
Ive seen a mountain fire into light , turn night into day
and thanked the lord to wake the next day
Built a fire so bright it did the heavens ignite
Stood beneath a frozen waterfall glistening at midway point
surrounded by sunshine rays through canopy roof and thick undergrowth

Ive listened to the sound of the natives scurrying beneath the twigs and betwixt the rocks
patiently praying upon there next bounty and pondering whence to pounce
The roar of the night so positively piercing the dim overcame my inhibitions
and the hairs on the back of my neck let me know tonight my heart was alive and that sleep
would fail

Ive scattered ashes to prosperity on a view so panoramic God himself would have blushed
Lived my fathers dream and boy the things we as a family have seen
and to the best friends i have met who i will never forget,
All of these things i have seen and have sensed under African Sunset Skies !!! .
